High idle and due for MOT!

Postby HJ2 » Wed 28.01.2015, 13:49

Dear all,

My Belgian friend Ivo has some problems with high idle on his Elan. I thought i would make a new topic for it so he can focus on the solution (hopefully)
his MOT is due early February, and it will not pass for sure in the current state, so all help is appreciated! I'll start with helping him out by translating for him and post on LEC :D

Problem:
With a warm engine suddenly idle started to go up to 2.500 RPM, which is now the default idle rpm with hot engine.
From cold, idle starts at around 1500 pm.

Some history:
Cheapscan showed error 22 (low voltage TPS)
Tried to re-adjust the TPS, but 1500 rpm was as low as it would get. Any lower and the engine stalled.
After that tried another TPS + throttle body, but with the same results (so... NO results...)
Then replaced the CTS, but without any luck, no result

HJ2's earmarked candidates: 1. IAC, 2. Vacuum leak 3. Air Temperature Sensor

Any other pointers would be appreciated!

Sorry for my Dutch:

Hoi Ivo,

http://wikilec.9600.org/index.php/Engin ... components
IAC Valve: Nr. 25
MAT sensor: nr. 19
Naast 19 zitten ook de vacuum aansluitingen.

It's most probably a vacuum leak ... try pulling one of the tubes off to see if the speed increases ... if it doesn't it will confirm it's already leaking.

Sorry to hear about the crash of the family car Ivo!
That's a big challenge fixing that AND be in time with the Elan repair for the MOT.

If I were you i would spend one hour on the Elan (vacuum), chances are that it will be fixed then and that is one problem less to bother you.

Yep, our daughter has once again crashed a car! :smt076
Going to try to dismantle all the pleated parts this weekend. :banghead:

Nevertheless will first try to resolve the problem with the Elan.

Hi
I had a similar problem, after much searching it was found to be the earth wire being loose. This is the earth on the left of the engine as you look at it down by the cam belt cover to the left of it towards the alternator..

This detail was added to the Tickover page on the Wiki at the time Ade posted it ... it would probably benefit from being expanded on and maybe a picture adding.

Could it be that these are two wires? Than I already checked and no problem found. :?

Everything checked and found nothing. :bonk:
However, there's no error code more so the TPS is good.
No leaks were found, and I mounted the throttle valve with silicone to be sure not to draw false air.

My patience is wearing thin. :?

It's not blown the idle-speed adjuster screw out has it, like in this thread?
Try either using a 2ft piece of hose as a stethoscope to trace the hissing noise, or blocking the intake pipe.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

I try myself in my best English so sorry for the mistakes! :-D

Enright!
I bought a full throttle body with TPS mounted from my friend Peter who was on an Elan he had just bought for parts and was therefore certainly fine functioning.

Have meanwhile replaced everything whatever I can and I don't hear a small leak anywhere so I do not know.
Some history:
Cheap Scan Showed error 22 (low voltage TPS)
Tried to re-adjust the TPS, but 1500 rpm was as low as it would get. Any lower and the engine stalled.
After That tried another TPS + throttle body, but with the same results (SO ... NO results ...)
Then Replaced the CTS, but without any luck, no result
Replaced MAT: no result

Yesterday I received the new IAC valve from SJ and mounted but the result remains the same! :wtf:
So I keep searching. :smt085

Could it be that there is something wrong with part 9? (Exhaust Gas Recirculation vacuum solenoid valve)
If I blow smoke from my cigar in the small bowel from the EGR smoke comes out from above through the holes off part 9? Should that be closed?
This still contains a membrane so I guess that normally can not pass through?

HJ, declare my teks if necessary because I do not know if I wrote it understandable!

Ivo,

I think there is no need to improve your translation. At least i can read it fine and know perfectly what you mean!
If am correct, it is still a fact that when you pull a vacuum hose, the rpm does not change at all. (as it was high already).

So it still looks like the vacuum system needs to be investigated a bit further!

Perhaps you can clamp (dichtknijpen met een klemmetje) the vacuum hose to the EGR solenoid and see if that changes something.
In fact you could do that with all strategic positioned vacuum hoses!

After the EGR I would start with heater control (block it all together from the vacuum reservoir under the front left wing). as there are a lot of hoses there that could go awry.

Good luck man!

Though, personally, I don't think 'Blowing smoke from your cigar into your small bowel' is either recommended (or indeed what you meant)

Nevertheless, your English is a darn sight better than my Dutch, so no worries
