New Member And Deposit Placed

Postby par » Sun 22.02.2015, 01:39

Hi Just popped in to say hello.

I have always admired the Elan and my interest was piqued when I was picking up some Honda CRX parts from Jamie N on here and had a look at his white Elan.

Well I went and viewed one that was for sale at SMS in Glasgow and have placed a deposit, having now joined the LEC forum it appears that it used to belong to Scott J on here! Probably should have come on here first and carried out some research first

Will be doing quite a bit of reading up on things in here to try and get up to speed.

Hi, and welcome to LEC :D

Whilst it would always be considered to be a good idea to do the research first, at least you have stepped into a good position.....

..... Scotts black car is well known on here (and Scott still drops in ocassionally).

As such, there is some 'documented' history of work done, and it is known to have been a good car, and not an unknown quantity - a good base for ownership in my opinion, otherwise you wouldn't know what *may* njeed attention if just going on the dealers' information.

There are plenty of posts to read through, and feel free to ask anything you can't easily find the answers to.

If you go to Advanced Search, and put "Scott J" as the post author, it will give you 720 posts he has made (results here) which will keep you busy for a while :D

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Dont worry Jamie I am keeping the CRX :D

Been clearing the garage out today so I can get both cars tucked away in the dry. You dont have a use for a VT gearbox (Y21 I think), it has a noisy ISB I believe, it came as a spare but I have never ran it? Will likely get skipped unless you want it.

Thanks, the sales guys did say someone else had been in for a test drive the other week.

Are you still planning on looking at the other black one in Durham? you might end up with a bargain if the condition is good.

Yeah it could come in useful Steven, I have plenty of Y21 parts in the Gearbox bits box :D so could recondition it no problem, whether I could find anything to put it in is a different matter!.

Hi there. You might need to PM Scott and ask him about his rear wishbones. I'm sure he mentioned to me in the passing that after a visit to Kenny Broon they needed doing sooner rather than later

Glad to see another Elan in Fife - the Kingdom should be a good place to see them in the summer.

the upper wishbones are S2's and the lower got life in them. Rear callipers are new PNM's, brake lines etc., rear in is virtually brand new.

You're in a very fortunate position Par (welcome by the way) - Jamie has done some pioneering work with roof/door seals and you have the chance to see that first-hand. Take careful note of what you see, because you'll do better to find an Elan that anyone has spent more time trying to make leak-proof! Just watch that he doesn't distract you and try to shoehorn a VTEC engine in while you're not looking - he's been after a suitable donor for a while!

Was supposed to be picking the Elan up on Saturday morning but got a call from SMS today saying it wont be ready. It needed a new brake disc for the MOT and because it it has the AP Racing kit fitted it has taken them a while to source one.

Delivery of the disc is expected next week so it will be next Saturday before I can pick it up, bit annoying as I had arranged for the insurance to start from tomorrow :(

Two weeks later than originally planned but should be picking up the Elan tomorrow, just hope the pouring rain breaks for a while to drive it home with the roof down :D

Actually met the previous owner Scott J the other night and picked up a few parts he still had lying around - a true enthusiast and a really nice guy for a hairdresser! Am I getting the hang of this forum yet :?:

Picked up the Elan today and the sun was shining so had a good drive home with the roof down :D

Had my first "nice car" conversation with a random stranger while parked outside Halfords, turned out the old boy used to have a Europa as well as a Mk1 Lotus Cortina (one of my favourite cars) and a mk2 Lotus Cortina with twin 45's but got sick of balancing the carbs.

Overall well impressed with the car but will need a wee bit of tidying up here and there. Turns out Scott J is the Ex-Owner who keeps on giving as I found brand new windscreen seals in the boot. I have ordered up a new APR front disc as the dealer only changed the one which failed the MOT. Just noticed that one of the headlights doesnt raise when switched on unless it is given a helping hand and I can hear a motor turning and something bouncing so will have to investigate further and call the dealer in the morning (not sure how it would have passed an MOT). Bumper has been painted by the dealer but doesnt look to have been refitted correctly so will need to look at that.

It already has the Jamie N A pillar rubber seals but will need to put a list together of the other perishable parts to be replaced, top of the list will probably be the rubber window seals at the top of the doors as these have both split.

I ahve started a project thread to keep a record of my progress:-

Sounds like a dodgy MOT, I advised you to check the headlights and horn. Also SMS cowboys if they just changed one disc, discs come in pairs, though you do have the EBC redstuff pads now, I presume they just fitted new disc on same old pads recipe for wear down fast. Yup windscreen seals in boot to complement Jamies new ones.

Any advisories on the MOT?

ps; next person on any LEC thread that refers to me as a hairdresser< ..... is getting a kick in the baws, joke has worn a bit thin. 11 years on LEC, establishing club from old days and now all I get is pish.
