hi everyone. hope you can help. i will be having the sump removed and a protective 'cup' welded around the bottom of it for protection as it has been scuffed in the past. whilst this will be done i will have the cambelt changed. the belt was changed only 10,000 miles ago, but it was in 2006. i have read it should be done every 5 years. so..........
would it be wise to change it?
do i need to change the tensioner and the idler as well?
i will be having the water pump changed as well, but is the rockauto pump supplied with the cambelt kit, still the wrong one?
any help is appreciated. cheers,
paul.

Hi Paul,
Changing the timing belt is definitely a matter of 'prevention is better than cure'. The effect of the belt letting go is potentially so horrendous, that it makes sense to follow the maintenance schedule. Much like insurance, it's expensive and we dont like paying it but the alternative of not having it... I believe that the belt can go brittle with age and start to crack and that is where the 'every 5 years' comes from.
Sounds like you are having soneone else look at the belt (garage?), in which case the question should be why would you NOT change the whole lot? A significant part of the time to do the job is gaining access, so it makes economic sense to do everything while you've got it in bits.
Are you considering changing the other belts while you have access?

hi mazr. thanks for the advice. yes a garage is doing it for me. i will also have the tensioner and idler changed as well. as for the other belts, do you mean the alternator and P.A.S. belts? if so, then yes i may as well have those done as well.

It's an important job and not a time to save a few shekels. Do the belt, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley, spark plugs, cam cover gasket, crankshaft, camshaft seals and drive belts. Change the plug wires, if in doubt. Did mine once and bought individual parts from Rock Auto.
Make certain I left nothing out and enjoy your Elan.

As far as I know, the Dayco provided pump is STILL WRONG. To be safe, order the kit without the pump
DAYCO Part # 95169K1 Timing Belt Kit without Seals or
DAYCO Part # 95169K1S Timing Belt Kit with Seals and buy the pump by itself:
AIRTEX Part # AW9220 {#WP717} Includes Gasket

I just received the dayco cambelt kit including the pump seals and tensioners and I can confirm the water pump has the rounded teeth and fits perfectly in the belt
