Heads up!..Elan at Auction... (SOLD)

This Monday at Blackbushe BCA (Surrey) there is a White SE ,92J, with a warranted 24,500 miles!, car looks very tidy, the condition report states a few flaws but these reports are often exaggerated at BCA, looks like some very minor things from what I can see.

Would be great if someone on here bought it, I would be right on this but its too far away for me, if its not snapped up by an enthusiast it will be scooped up by a trader who will add grands to the price just like the others we have seen over the past few months, don't let that happen!!!!, sale starts at 10am, surely there will be a couple of Guys on here interested in this? .

thanks for the tip jamie, My mum seems rather keen on an elan but her major fear is the mileage so this seems like something she may be interested in.
the colour is probably the worst of it... nothing that cant be sorted in my garage tho

I have beat the traders in their own game twice in the past.

its worth noting that you must add 200-500 quid to your bid to pay the auction fees.

I bought a ford focus for 600 quid about 6 years ago 400 bid plus 200 fees. fixed the exhaust for 30 quid then sold it on ebay for 800
also bought an avencys 5 years ago (04 plate) for 1800, 1500 bid plus 300 fees.

as a tip for anyone going to auction, the dealers tend to push the price up mostly for the sake of discoraging a private buyer from returning, but they will back off when the risk of getting little profit is too high. (reason why the focus with broken exhaust was so cheap)

If a private buyer has the balls to do it. he can bluff a sequence of bids on a first car to burn a dealer, then making all other dealers back off on the pushing up price business when going for the real deal. its a gamble, at high stakes. suggest you only do it if the bluff car is actually something you like as well.

And REMEMBER you must pay a deposit as soon as the car leaves the ramp/carpet/hall, and full payment of the rest before the next auction day.

I wonder who is the previos owner. I am guesing the car was given as part exchange for a new one.

I think it has been on a P/P, considering its still showing as taxed and the log book is to apply, so probably has been traded in but the plate retained. Looks like a good Service history as well with the last one done recently.

- with buyer's fees that willl be the blunt end of £12 grand to the buyer. (I didn't bid - too rich for me)

Holy Moley!, I didn't think it would be cheap but that's astonishing especially considering its not even an S2, just shows the massive difference low mileage makes, I think I will keep mine a garage Queen its only 40k more than that one .
Is this an indication that Elan prices may start to rise significantly in the near future?.

Jim, what did the bidding start at?, and how was the condition of the car overall?.

Bidding started at £5,000 - a commission bid. Bidding was er, brisk..

Chap standing next to me was bidding against the net bidders - he dropped out at £11K

Car was pretty good - underneath was quite clean but the usually rusty bits were somewhat corroded. It had the original SE hood, solid colour grey leather seats (TBH for originality I personally would want the red stripe leather interior) There were signs of a repair at the base of the OS B pillar, but otherwise paint was original. Engine sounded fine. Aftermarket alarm. Paint has lots of swirl marks. Bell&Colvill stickers - suspect it was serviced by them (possibly they took it as a trade-in??)

I thought a dealer might charge around £9K to £10K - possibly it would reach £8K privately. I was stunned!

Jim, my beastie had the grey leather seats with no stripe, matter of personal taste I guess.

All classics on the rise at the moment, recovering economy and 0% bank interest so people parking their money somewhere. Boxsters have serious reliability issues with engines detonating, Elises rarely dropping below £10k, S2000s are widow makers, some people have serious attitude problems with MX5, so what is left, the M100, so I guess tidy ones will go up in value and at 25 yrs have indeed reached classic status. I don't include Z4 or SLK in above as not perceived as proper sports cars imho by people who would be looking at Lotus'.

Interesting you refer to the MX5 and completely forget to mention its 2 most common alternatives. the MGF and the MR2
I think the advantage of the elan in this market is the badge and very limited production line.

I certainly bought mine thinking of it as an investment for future, (in fact hopping it would be sold eventually to help cover the deposit on a house.)

i though i had stumbled across the one just sold at auction when i saw that car, but i noticed the one at auction was a J reg, and the one on carandclassic.co.uk was H reg
