Pan got hit really hard.

Hi all,

I was in a parking lot with a sunken sewer grate and whacked the pan on my M100.

Pretty big dent in it.

I have not worked much on M100 motors.

Can the pan be removed and replaced with the motor in place?

Where can I find a replacement pan, stock or racing, I don't care?

Hi Tony,
No need to panic (much ) the oil pans recently became available again in limited number through lotus and yes it can be done in place. Go here: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=24199&p=304449&hilit=Sump#p304449 Also as it's the same oil pan as the Isuzu impulse they can be found used, I know of a complete turbo engine for sale at $200 with a mint oil pan. If you search the forum you should find the member who is doing a group buy on an oil pan protector plate for the future.

When I search around, GEO STORM comes up, what year Impulse Turbo? etc, etc.
Just need some guidance what to look for.

Essentially 89 to 92 isuzu 1.6 motors are a match, but be careful on the n/a storm and asuna sunfire as they also had the 1.8 and 2.0 motor. I don't know about the storm 1.6 but as it's the isuzu motor with a GM logo then I would be willing to bet it's the same, see here http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geo_Storm

Not trying to be contrary, but NOT all 1.6L sumps are the same. The sump from a GEO Storm DOHC are not correct but the sump from a GEO Storm SOHC IS correct. The sump in the picture also looks like someone jacked the car up by it as the bottom is crushed.

I have a decent used sump for $50.00 if that will help. It has a few scratches and I can provide some pictures if you are interested. I am in NC, if that matters.

Hi Tony,

The thread concerning the sump guards is here, but it never went into production as Jeemy (who started it) got waylayed with other projects....

...however, I made one myself (details in the same thread) without too much difficulty, and, perhaps more of relevance for you, so did Blair (Elanlover).

I only say that, as he has a Federal car which is slightly more complicated to remove the prongeron than a UK car (cross braces fitted), but the principle is the same.

With the details given, it should be easily possible to either make one yourself, or get one fabricated and fitted at a shop for a few hours work.

Personally, I decided that if i were to try and make some more up, each one would need to be individually 'fitted' to the car anyway as no 2 elans ever seem to be the same, especially if the suspension and/or exhaust have been changed, so it didn't seem to be worthwhile.... If i made them all to fit my car, the chances are they would need fettling to fit anyone elses, and it is likely to be just as easy to start from scratch.

Hi John, no problem, if you have tried it then you know more than I do on the storm, though I did send a storm pan to the U.S and never heard that it didn't fit but I do not know if it was from the DOHC. Personally I would stick with Isuzu 1.6 and at $50 yours is a deal, The one here in town is from the identical engine (1.6 RS turbo) but you have to buy the whole drivetrain to get it

The Storm DOHC uses a completely different oil pick-up so that pan has a different baffle. The correct pan has a Tokyo Radiator label on the side of it and the one from the SOHC Storm is the exact same pan. I looked at the DOHC and it has a different part number.

I used the US Salvage Yard resource when there was a need for sumps a few years ago after Belgium and found some nice ones which I supplied to several owners. They are getting scarce and the salvage yard prices are well above $75.00 before shipping. The one I have has some scratches but nothing damaging, but most want a new sump.

Lotus has stock of new sumps again A100E6330S and their price is a very affordable (not) £154.21 and it has been redesigned so the drain plug is at the very bottom instead of the bottom side.

Not to be stupid here, but what is the "prongeron"?

Looking at the car from under, it appears to me that I have I have to remove the exhaust at least. It is a federal car.

What else do I have to remove to do this? I am at work and cannot look at the car at the moment.

The prongeron is that grey (hopefully not rust) coloured piece of metal that bolts to the underframe of the car and makes it hard to get at your oil filter too. It runs down from the front of the car near the rad to the back of the engine bay and splits right and left - a bit like an oddly shaped "Y". If you're lucky, yours will still have the circular "no jacking" stickers on it. Its a structural piece and part of the overall suspension. It can be removed from underneath the car and you'll need to do that given that it partially blocks access to almost everything in the engine bay from underneath.

Maybe I'm being stupid but the image of the new sump with new location for the drain plug seems like a bad idea to me....it was the drain plug that the MOT station snagged on their brake tester and ripped a 2" hole in my car's sump.

Putting the drain on the bottom only seems to increase the exposed area further.
