When you say early vs late do we have a yr range 89-91 vs 94-95?

I think I want a LHD 4 position as its a US spec 91 ELAN

One other thing, I thought I saw posts where people just replaced the Heater Matrix / core, is there a part # ? Any cross reference to something available?

Have you confirmed that the heater matrix can't be repaired?

The US Spec heater assembly is A100P0103F which is a LHD, 6 Position Control. They distinguish LHD from RHD and 4 Position from 6 Position. The drive side is easy to know. The "Position" refers to the control knob in the facia (dash) that controls the air flow to the cockpit, not the number of speeds for the fan. The US (FED) car is a 6 Position model.

That being said, Geoff has been keeping the heater assemblies for a while and he put several in my shipment that is still stalled in the UK.

He will join in sometime soon and tell you if he still has any left in his inventory and what it will cost including shipping. They are big and heavy, so you might be surprised at the total price.

If he doesn't have any left, you can let me know and I will see if I can get my friend in the UK to dig one out and ship it to you. We had hoped the container would have been here already and I could dispatch the remaining few from the US to help with the high shipping costs.

There might be - if Geoff has got them.

I've got 6 units here, and I've just been to see what they are - unfortunately they are all for LHD cars (but I have got 4 and 6 position units!).

If Geoff hasn't got one, then I'm afraid you're out of luck - unless you want a 'foreign' one to canibalise - it will all depend on what has gone wrong with yours, and if any of the parts are useable.

It isn't a job I know anything about as I've never needed one, sorry I can't help further.

In my garage I have a heater unit, don't know if 4or6 position (or rather most of one) somewhat disassembled, what is the nature of your problem, perhaps I have the required component?

Thanks for the responses guys. My problem is that following on from a leaking rad replacement, rusty fans replaced and while I was in there, heater valve fitment I got a load of coolant in the passenger footwell. Have got the seat, carpet and insulation out and drying at the moment. I reckon the heater radiator or pipes have split but can't see the area yet to confirm.
Does anyone know if the main fascia has to come out (as per the manual) or if I can get away with just the fascia mask removal. I ask this purely because I have seen pictures that show the fascia mask removed and heater ducting out

The entire Facia has to come out. It isn't difficult but it is a pain, you can remove it with the facia in situ, ie: As a complete unit, the silly bits are, access to the screws on the vents, removal of the steering wheel and disconnecting the heater control rod.

Shout if you have any problems, my dash has been in and out (once for the same reason as yours) so often that I now play the hokey Cokey on my cd as background music!

My matrix gave out on a weekend tour of Mid Wales some years back

This thread, well some of it (as my filling the header tank and flooding the coils compounded my problems) refers: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=21365&p=270089#p270089

I posted up the following in a similiar thread some years back:

The matrix consists of two copper pipes that are integral to the body of the matrix, when the heater box is installed these pipe protrude through the bulk head into the engine bay and on the engine side of the bulkhead are connected to two hoses which supply and returns the water dependant upon a vacuum valve that is operated by the temp control knob in the cabin.

I merely provide this ramble in order to show that any water leaking in side the cabin must be attributed to the matrix as there is no other place from which coolant can escape within the cabin.

When my matrix gave out it dumped all the coolant, very rapidly, in the cabin and in my case, because the valve in the engine bay was sound I was able to turn the heat down and retain some coolant in the engine but even then I came back on a truck!

Apart from dismantling the dash to pull the heater box any evidence of coolant leakage from the matrix will be limited to the area of the transmission tunnel directly below the heater and, if sufficient loss has occurred, in the footwells, try running your hand below the heater box, you could also slide a newspaper underneath to see if any drips etc occurs when you are back from a run.

Beware though, what may be small leak now could rapidly worsen, so stay alert.

I purchased a new matrix from a local Radiator firm at extreme cost, well it was extremely because I was subsequently offered an OEM heater box at a much lower price. Geoff has some boxes I believe, and, furthermore, the matrix is the same no matter if 4 or 6 position so can be cannabilised if necessary.

Just to confirm, I have got some here, but they are all for LHD cars (4 & 6 possition) - obviously, they have new matrices, but i don't know if that is the difference between LHD/RHD or if it is something else - if someone can advise, then If it's any good, you can have one of them (if Geoff hasn't got the whole complete RHD unit).
