Hi all
picked up my 1996 Elan with 8000km's on Sunday (8155 now) ...
Its a great car ..... but .... have noticed when turning ( in a round about or other turn with "load") you hear a rubbing sound like tyre on plastic or other ... not mechanical ... pretty sure not CV joints ... at lower speeds and no nose weight (braking etc) you dont get a noise ....
yet to get it on a hoist to look ... but all else is standard and as new ...
it has been fitted with AP front brakes ? if that caused anything ?
thoughts - ideas
thanks in advance
Gavin

Hi Gavin,
That's low mileage!
If the brakes have been upgraded then there is a possibility that the hoses are rubbing on the wheels, especially if the fitter was not aware that this can be an issue.
The PAS also hisses near full-lock. This is normal.

You need to confirm that this is not the problem as a matter of the utmost urgency, the last thing you need is a brake failure at speed. For peace of mind go check NOW!!!!

Agree entirely: check your hoses immediately!!
They should leave the calliper angled approx. 45dg backwards and up, then run along and attached to the upper wishbone with a small bracket, then onto the chassis just above the front upper wishbone pivot.
If it isn't the hoses rubbing, check that the wheel arch liners are properly attached everywhere: one could have dropped down and the wheel rubbing it on full lock.
For your safety's sake I hope it is the latter!!
Safe motoring.

Okay ... Found the issue
AP brakes fitted - new rotors and calipers ...
Appears in a right hand turn and less obvious on a left ... The car - when under load in the corner / turn causes some flex through the upright bushes that allows the edge of the lower control arm to just touch the rotor causing the grating sound ..
Solution ... We Dug a massive trench in the rotor to accommodate this movement ..
No ... Really .. We shaved a half millimeter off the inside face of the rotor and a quarter millimeter off the control arm ... Works okay ... But still got a noise under an extreme right turn ..
So ... Has anyone found this issue with an AP rotor kit for the élan before ? .. What resolved it
Thanks
