belching smoke and running rough

Hi newie here but long time lotus nut.

I have just bought a 1991 elan turbo sold as a doerr upper as it had not been run for 7 years.
had it running and it was belching out smoke and firing on a couple of cylinders for about 30 seconds then cut out and wouldnt start again.
I did a compression test all four cylinders spot on 165lb.
I have had timing cover off and timing seems to be correct.
I have replaced plugs, leads, injectors, fuel filter, checked timing and is now running but really rough and belching out smoke.
No fault codes showing.
i have noticed one of the small air filter pipes from the oil seperator is dripping oil into the inlet pipe which feeds the turbo also smells of petrol.
I have taken the oil seperator lid off and that smells of oil and petrol and overflowed when it was running.

Any help would be great.

CTS kaputt making the em think the engine is sub zero temp and over fuelling the engine.

Do a paper-clip test (check the link to it in the Wiki - see just below the banner on this page).
If no error codes then I would suspect coil packs - they're usually the first things to break down.
You need to try to get the base timing sorted before casting suspicion on anything else - again the procedure is in the Wiki, but I realise that can be difficult if you can't even get it running properly.

Managed to find the main problem. Enhanced by lotus of little ones caused by the last owner being a complete f t w c a .

On putting the fuel injector plugs back on I managed to lose one of the small u shaped clips that locks the plug on. Are these available anywhere or fitted to another car. Would anyone have a couple of spares they would sell and post to me.

Mine did the same but I was able to retrieve them with a little telescopic magnetic retrieving tool from Halfords. In my case, it simply sat on top of the inlet manifold and a certain amount of fishing around there with the tool found it.

Might be worth a go in your case?

When I ordered two sets of injectors from them last year, they didn't charge duty separately but it appeared the shipping was all consolidated with other shipments and I believe they incorporated the duty in the price / shipping cost for the order and it was effectively (and pretty transparently to me at least) prepaid.

I didn't work it out, but the postage seemed slightly high and probably covered it.

There is a certain threshold where Duty / Tax and other charges aren't required. In the US, it is around $300.00 per day. The UK seems to be around £60.00. If you keep the parcel cost (including postage) below the threshold, you don't get charged - especially when using the postal system. Companies like DHL, UPS, FedEX and TNT must report all imports and file for the entry charges because they declare the entire load they are importing in one lump price. They then break it down shipment by shipment and they get to collect an additional fee from each recipient for preparing the documentation for consumption entry.

The clip I mentioned below is the metal clip that holds the injector into the rail, not the clip for the electrical connector. My apology

The LOTUS part number for the injector retaining clip is A100E6576S which is:CLIP-FUEL INJECTOR (PACK OF 4). Current price is £10.03 - This is for a pack of 4 clips.

I have tried a lot of different searches but couldn't find any plain U shaped clips. The newer sockets seem to have hooks at the open end but there is a youtube posting showing how to make a replacement using a paperclip.

The clip they show making has the extra hooks but the rest might guide you to make something that works. If you can't resolve the issue, you can send me an email with your address and I will post a spare clip. Don't expect it quickly since I am in the US, but I have a few spare injector harnesses that have clips, so...

Maybe someone closer to you will feel like helping and offer you one of their spares.

I did exactly the same when changing my injectors and lost one of the clips. Have a look around the engine bay and if yours is like mine there are 2 unused blue plugs of a similar design to the injector plugs with the metal clip fitted. I removed a clip and transferred it to the injector plug. The blue plugs are lurking on the inner wing between expansion tank and air filter box. If you have AC in your car they may be in use in which case you are out of luck.

Found the plugs under the water expansion tank but the clips are a bit different.

Looks like a paper clip job.
