S2 Refrigerant type?

Dear colleagues,

Does anyone know if the S2 came with R12 as well? Or was it already suitable for the R134a stuff (or newer)?
A quick answer would be appreciated, as i am on my way for an aircon service...

Ive not got a clue which gas....but I would suspect its been re-filled before........any clues in the service history?.....
can they work out which gas?.....(the guys at the service centre)

have had a look through the manuals, owners handbook and the service sheets....

I cant see anything about the refrigeration gas.....sorry

If the system has been changed (new seals etc) to accept a 'newer' gas, then the filling valve will be a different type - they are specific to the gas type, so the garage should be able to fill with only the correct refrigerant.

Well... The filler caps on my system made the mechanic look like a monkey into a rusty watch...

I believe that the R 134a system was introduced for the S2 - R134a was introduced in the early 90's and production of R12 was banned in the EU in 1994 - Everything forward of the Evaporator is different.

For definite identification - The R12 compressor has 3 mountings and rear pipe connections, while the R134a compressor has four mountings and a side entry pipe connections - See the parts manual sections 18 and 40.

Any A/C technician will recognise the connectors by sight.

My Eclat Rivera came with aircon and a targa roof panel which is almost as silly as aircon in an Elan. That used Freon R12 until the heat exchanger 'rad' got holed and I created my own hole in the ozone layer.
I got a new rad but never got system refilled. R12 was banned under the Montreal Protocol and I think I was told there was a top up fluid compatible with R12, not so environmentally nasty and not so efficient, called R409 blend..
Was also told 'fill the entire system with R409 and it might not work particularly well'.

Compressor on Eclat is so ridiculously heavy that it was always shearing M6 bolts that held it onto the alloy block until I increased those to M10 but I'm planning to remove the system and save lugging 40lbs of weight around for nothing - if I ever get round to getting it back on the road!
