When I bought my Elan at the beginning of May, the best insurance deal I found was with Routen Chaplin in Nottingham, who have a special Lotus policy. For a reasonable £25 extra, I got breakdown cover in UK and Europe. However, the policy document arrived today, and the cover is a bit cheap and cheerful. So . . . If I wanted to change, what's other peoples's experience of breakdown cover? What do folks recommend? Thoughts gratefully received.

Tesco Clubcard vouchers and the RAC are a good option.

I got Breakdown & Recovery cover for myself and my daughter for £36 worth of clubcard vouchers (was a special offer at the time, normally £40), there are other levels of cover available and worth noting it is the individuals that are covered rather than the car.

Many thanks - I didn't know you could use Tesco vouchers to pay for the RAC. Must ask my wife - she is the Keeper of the Vouchers. I assume that's £36 (or £40) annually?

Yes cost in vouchers is per year, the RAC will send a renewal at the normal inflated price but just ignore it and buy through the Tesco website again.

Yes, I had "the normal inflated price" from Admiral last year when I wanted to renew the multi-car on the other two. I told them I wasn't renewing, because they were uncompetitive, and they got quite shirty with me: "Go on then, if you think you can get a better deal [sniff]"

So I did. And saved £150 for better cover

I quit Admiral some years back when I was trying to cover 4 cars, they were ridiculous. Perhaps it's Wiltshire they have a downer on!

Nope, it spreads West to the mudplains/rivermouth that some people call "The Seaside". They even tried to get me to buy direct as they were doing me a favour by matching their competitors' price on the phone.... got quite annoyed when I explained that I wanted a stuffed Meerkat toy so would go elsewhere
