S1 & S2 roof

Postby JonJon » Wed 22.07.2015, 17:09

Hi All,
Can anyone give me a definitive answer. What,if any are the differences between the S1 and an S2 roosf, can they be swapped over, S2 onto S1 and vice versa?
Cheers Jon.

AFAIK they are interchangeble.

On the S2 hood there seems to be larger gusset at the rear of the hood at the top of the B post. I can't think of any other differences offhand. They both leak.

the header rail on the S2 was longer to give a slight over hang to reduce water access......

and yes the drainage channel got a return to the horizontal at the top of the b post

Thanks guys,
So fitting a good S1 roof to my S2 whilst I have old one re-furbished shouldn't cause to much trouble :D

Actually Chipp, it was Mar I was thinking of when I posted earlier. For some unearthly reason I thought his company was Trim Technology but you're correct - it's M100 Hoods.

And Lowestoft is a helluva lot nearer Kent than Coventry. Or Newcastle ;-)

if you are putting an S2 roof on an S1, you will need to make the front of the roof by the header seal wider. By riveting a plate in or something similar, otherwise the fabric will flap around

I have an S2 hood on my S1 and its a perfect fit on the front rail, no sign of anything that could flap around. My hood was made by Trim Technology so it may depend on who is supplying the S2 hood as to how well it fits.

Andy,

I don't think it matters who *made* or *supplied* the hood - the fact remains that it is the fitting which matters, and (as stated) the S2 hood is slightly wider and to get a good fit it needs the wider S2 front panel (or extend an 'S1' item).

Obviously, if yours fits properly (as does mine) then the header rail has probably been modified by the fitter. (quite an easy thing to do whilst hood material is removed for replacement).

I would equate it to something like an item of clothing.... it matters not where it was purchased, a size 40" waist will allways be 40", and if you are a size 38" then the options are to either have an extra bit of cloth, or add a bit of weight! - your choice is to use a belt and have ill-fitting trousers, or add some 'material' to your waist and have well-fitting trousers!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

But there is another option!, A Tailor made and exquisitely superior header seal made from modern EPDM Rubber, and be done with that rotten sponge junk. :P

Jamie,

Whilst I fully agree with the EPDM route, the issue is the flat metal plate across the front of the header rail, it's nowt to do with the seal (although that is why the S1 & S2 have different part numbers for the seal, and consequently why there is either a bit of compression or stretching required if the 'wrong' seal is used).

Basically, as the hood material is about 3/4" wider for the S2, the plate which it sticks to needs to be the same 3/4" wider (I mean 'wider' as in width of the car - although it's sort-of 'longer' if you just refer to the plate!!!)

Dave,
I recently saw the most appalling fitting roof on an S1 that was obviously not to original spec though supplied as supposedly fitting the S1. I therefore presumed that not all hoods supplied by different makers will be exactly the same.

The 40" waste analogy is probably not a good one to support the argument that the hoods will all be the same though I admit they should be. It sounds like you go to the same old place each time when you buy your trousers and I can't blame you for that, I hate shopping. The trousers supplied by M&S, Matalan, and the likes of TKMax only highlight that manufacturers have different ideas what a 36" waist, in my case, actually is.

The fact that most are hand cut and sown must mean differences will be evident but then I'm no expert so I'll shut up.

I believe Mark agreed to buy Trim Technology's remaining M100 stock.
