i must admit that whilst I am no hooligan I drive my Élan enthusiasticly all the time and always with the roof down. I plot all of my mileage and fuel costs on a spread sheet and for 2 years I have always averaged 24 mpg. This weekend I went to Silverstone for the classic event. On Friday night it was cold and I was tired so I sat, with the roof up, at a steady 66 ish most of the way except for the 45 miles of average speed cameras at 50 mph. Today it was lashing down so I sat doing much the same all the way home. In total I completed 460 miles and my spread sheet indicates I got 34 mpg over the three days. I'm genuinely amazed. What are other people's experiences.

Very similar experiences, if driven hard then fuel consumption is down in the twenties but drive it with little turbo use and like Miss daisy and mine will get into the mid thirties

But then where's the fun in that

I used my first SE for business use so did about 100k miles in it over 3 years and noticed I got around 26 in summer and 30 + in winter. I think it's more to do with whether you're using the turbo with enthusiasm than hood up or hood down. If hood is up because it's raining road conditions won't allow enthusiastic driving using turbo boost so I'd expect higher mpg.

The hood being up will improve the mpg as the car is more aerodynamic, but probably far less effect than you'd really notice.

I would say that your numbers are about right - mid 30's driven 'steady' and mid 20's when driven 'enthusiastically'.

34-32 when driving withouth use of turbo pressure and cruising
26-22 when doing a scénic tour in our hillside, with enthousiasme
18 when having really fun, using the mountune, intercooler and exhaust upgrades to the best they can give
No track experience, though I would expect it to go to about 15-12.
The more horses you uses, the more food you have to provide. No rocket science

i track down my UK MPGs using a free android phone app called fuelLog.

here's the stats
highest
38.13 (trip to Cornwall last week, steady 70's with occasional fluctuations when overtaking other cars/vans and some roadworks or just plain country roads going down to 40's )

lowest
26.00 (no idea how, in fact cant think ov me driving like a nutter ever to justify such)

average
31.35 (mostly comprises of either long trip to the west midlands meetings and daily commuting to work which is only 2 miles away )

Incidentally, I got 33.0 mpg over 751 miles giving it plenty of right foot

PS Overall on my Collapso Red M100, 12 years use and over 43,000 miles I get 30.0 mpg for all driving

got 33mpg from Elan to Silverstone last time and 37 mpg this time in the 5, a worthwhile saving. Avg was 38 maybe due to all the 50 mph speed cameras but last 100m from Carlisle to Glasgow dropped to 33 taking overall avg down to 37. Last 100m at 90 all the way.

Amazed you got 38 mpg with a Lambo. Gallardo desperate!y trying to keep up with the MX5 from the Lakes to Weegieshire Who needs a BBR supercharger ?? Just think, if you had less pedal to the metal you could've got 40 mpg or more

Just happened to be looking in the Lotus Service Notes Technical Data for something else and saw TDH Page 6 has the published Fuel Consumption chart ....

says at a Constant 56 mph (and if you can do that - ) SE 42.2 mpg, S2 40.6 and NA 40.8

Constant 75 mph (I was trying to check my fuel consumption m'lud..) SE 31.8, S2 31.7 and NA 35.2

I don't ride an Urban Cycle so I won't bother with that. Ok then, 26.2 , 26.4, 25.9.
