SE cat on S2

Postby Elannewbie » Fri 04.09.2015, 16:59

Will a cat for a turbo SE fit an S2? The part numbers are different but the physical dimensions appear to be the same, at least when I put the SE cat alongside the existing cat on the car (S2) they appear identical.
My exhaust is completely standard 2" system. Have fitted SJ Sports cars stainless hockey stick section and genuine lotus stainless rear silencer.
I am about to do away with pre cat and the cast iron nasty bits and replace with a piper down pipe.
Max at lakeside engineering is going to port the waste gate - we have not discussed to what size he will port yet but, if he is happy to go to 20mm then so be it.

If any one has or knows of anyone who has fitted an SE cat to an S2 then there reply will be greatly received.

Kind regards.

Grahame.

The UK SE didn't have a cat - that's why it's quoted as 165 bhp and the S2 155bhp. What's the history of your car if it has a cat?

Ah-ha, ok that's kind of weird as the cat I have is made by Euroflo and on there website they have an exhaust cat listed for a 1992 Elan. I did not think the S2 was produced in 92. The cat they have listed for a 1994 car (my S2 year) is a different part number hence my post. Also, strangely enough Euroflo do not have a listing for a 1993 Elan. Being that they look the same I think I'll just ask max what he thinks.

Thanks for the reply Lotusflasherman.

SE's exported to California had a cat but UK SE never did. I've got one of the last SE's, built in 92 but P.D.I.' ed by factory and supplied direct to Elf Oil in Dec '93 and that is definitely 'cat-less'.. any Cat for an SE will be for an export model.
S2 started to be sold in 94 as far as I know...

Your signature mentions a Black S2 #73, is it this car you are talking about.

Yes black S2 number 73. It has both the pre cat and the exhaust cat. At the last mot the tester said that as the emissions were well within the limits why didn't I think of removing the pre cat as the exhaust cat would be more that adequate to keep it within the allowable emission limits.

I have had a spare cat for the car for a while now (the Euroflo one) and being that I'm having the piper down pipe fitted if the exhaust cat is looking a little past its best the intention is to fit the spare. Upon looking at the manufactures website two different part numbers appeared for two different years of car but, as Lotusflasherman quite rightly stated the SE doesn't have a cat (UK cars).

The reason I ask the question is the part number on the spare cat I have is for an earlier Elan 1992 which was not fitted with a cat is this country. The part number for a 1994 S2 cat is different but as I posted before the two units look identical.

I think I may of answered my own question with my last post. It may just be a case of an error on the manufactures website. The cat I have also looks identical to the one SJSports cars is retailing, so if the SE never had a cat and only the S2 has the exhaust cat then there shouldn't be a problem... fingers crossed...

Do you need a piper down pipe, for what reason are you replacing the old one.
If you retain the pre-cat and remove the second one you should gain a little more performance.

To be completely honest with you chipp I probably don't "need" the piper down pipe but,as I'm having the turbo changed (ported as well) and my bonnet support structure has some cracks (heat soak from the cast iron) I figured that this may be the best route to take - plus the weight saving, minor reason. The other reason is that exhaust cats are available aftermarket whereas the precat is not, if I only had the precat and that died, it would be a pain in the a**e to get a replacement. At a later stage I could also "upgrade" the exhaust ( probably not thou, the stainless rear box from lotus cost nearly as much as a whole piper system!)
I am hoping there is method in my apparent madness :D

The FEDERAL (SE) cars ALL came with Pre-Cats and regular Cats installed. The parts book show a different part number for the SE version (F100S0024F) compared to the S2 version (A100S6021F), but I believe it has something to do with a change in the manufacturer than the fit. The F100S0024F cat is currently on liquidation at £129.17 + VAT. They had 41 available at the beginning of the September.

Lotus never offered a stainless rear box to the best of my knowledge.

Hi BCN

The part numbers you quote are correct, I checked them on the deroure website. I can only assume that on the Euroflo website that they are producing/stocking a cat for a U.S. Elan.

I purchased my stainless rear silencer from Bell & Colvill west horsley UK, part number A100S6024F it definitely appears to be stainless as it has been on the car for two years an no signs of rust on it anywhere. Alas Bell & Colvill no longer support the Elan m100 but, I do remember there product listing as advertising it as stainless as there was also a cheaper steel rear silencer but, as I had also just purchased a stainless hockey stick from SJ Sports cars I went for the ss version.

At £53.65, the SE muffler is 1/6th the price of the S2 muffler which is £300.39, so I would hope it is stainless.

You can't always trust Deroure as they don't provide the Lotus special parts and prices and their prices are sometimes not aligned with the monthly Lotus dealer price book. They are a great place to use for research but the factory parts books are the best place to start. You can get those MANUALS HERE

And just be sure that you have enough cats fitted to get through the MOT: remember the S2 has tighter emissions than the SE unless you have a friendly MOT garage.... :D

Yes, but the S2 is closed loop which makes a huge difference for the emissions test.

Latest update:- the piper downpipe does NOT bolt directly to the OE exhaust (even though the advert on the piper web site says it does). You end up with gaps between the OE flange and the piper flange and gasket. After quiet a few phone calls and having to send an OE exhaust part to piper they finally admitted that the two parts do not fit with each other. As there was no way I wanted the original cast iron dustbin refitted and various engineering solutions offered to piper ( at no avail!) I was left with the only option to have to stump up and purchase a full piper system plus cat. Pretty hacked off with the whole experience, glad it's got a lifetime guarantee as I don't want go through all that hassle again.

Oh well. It is not a bad investment, and certainly a whole lot cheaper than a new OEM exhaust.
Please let us now if you experience boost creep and to what size did you port the wastegate?

Funny you should mention that HJ2, over boost and fuel cut - oh deep joy!!! Waste gate ported to 20mm, 2 and a half inch piper downpipe, 2 and a quarter inch system all the way back. I had hoped that the sport cat and 2 and a quarter diameter system would of kept boost creep at bay but, alas no. Mechanic is in process of investigating problem but, I have a gut feeling the turbo will need to come off again to port the waste gate too 22mm. Think I might have to sell parts of my body to medical science to fund this...

Thanks HJ2 for the link, very interesting reading. So, reading between the lines, do you think I need to report the waste gate to 22mm?

yes, port to maximum diameter possible (without wastegate flap modifications)
