Hi Toby,
The manifold is just bare alluminium (unless it's been painted!) - I find that the best way to clean it is to use aerosol brake cleaner and a toothbrush.
If you take it in sections it comes up really well with minimal effort. Just spray an area, let it fizz for a second or two, scrub with the toothbrush, spray it again and mop with a piece of paper towel. Repeat as necessary. A couple of applications should be good enough (unless it's really crabby in areas) - when the liquid comes up clear, it's done!
If the brake cleaner is evaporatring too quickly, for the first clean you can use meths or cellulose thinners, and 'rinse' it off with the volatile solvent at the end.
As far as the brackets are concerned, I just used VHT paint on whatever I wanted to paint - either Black or Aluminium.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
