So, where to start?!
I bought my "new" toy on August 29th from a guy in Bethlehem PA via the lovely eBay. Not a bad little car, 54,000 miles but rather scruffy inside and out. The clear coat is shot on the bonnet and boot (yes I am a Brit) and the A pillar seals obviously leak as the oatmeal carpet set stinks! Also the car overheated when the guy was trying to sell it and so took it to his local garage where they fitted a switch hanging off the dash to manually switch on the cooling fans when the temperature starts to creep up! No carpet inserts in the doors and the passenger window doesn't really go up or down.
But boy does it drive well - even my wife acknowledged, as if on rails!
Why an Elan? In short, I have been lusting after one for 25 years! I was working at Lotus Engineering for a 3 month industrial attachment in 1990 and already had my heart set on buying one. At the time, the airfield used by Lotus as a test track was parked up with 100 or so unsold Elans and I had a plan to nab one when Lotus announced they were stopping making them and they sold out in a week!
Fast forward a quarter century, and I am living in the US having married a lovely New Yorker. Feeling a mid life crisis coming on, I "invested" $8,000 into my dream car and am pouring over all the posts on LEC to find out what needs to be done and what is possible.
I am so pleased to be part of the outstanding Elan community and look forward to (a) many happy, trouble-free miles of motoring (!) and (b) meeting you on either side of the Atlantic at future social events.
I am drawing up my battle plan for the renovation and will post it, and some photos, shortly!
Thanks
Dan
