Postby Fredjohn » Wed 18.11.2015, 21:26

Brightwells are auctioning a load of classic cars next Wednesday including a couple of Elan M100s and an Eclat 521

Link to sale catalogue

Also a lot of very interesting other cars: some nice MB's Porsches Triumphs and MG's.

Might go along and have a look.

I had wondered if I would too - I'm a sucker for 70s Italiana and there's what looks to be a rather nice Lancia Fulvia coupe on the list.

By the way, did you see that one of the Elans is Cat D?

Yes I did spot that but as it was 15yrs ago and has been on the road subsequently, Cat D being the least severe, I figure it is probably OK. Cat D are insurance write-offs because the ins co don't consider it worthwhile repairing, whilst an enthusiast probably would.

I agree - I'm not sure my insurance company would though :banghead:

A correct description of a Cat D vehicle is a constructive Total Loss, this is where repair costs are less than the vehicle value (PAV) and can be used by an Insurer to alleviate other costs such as credit hire, diminution etc. Example PAV £10000, repair costs £7500, Salvage value £2500. A cat D can have minimal damage or repair costs but other charges are eliminated by total losing the vehicle.
A cat C is where repair costs exceed the PAV and could be repaired by enthusiasts using green/non OE parts and reduced labour charges.

I went to a classic car auction at Brightwells a couple of years ago. It was a good sale, and I was impressed by how realistic their estimates were. The main problem I have with Brightwells is that, for me in Kent, it is a horrible place to get to, which is just as well or I would be there for every sale.

Went to auction in the end with brother-in-law. Took about 2 mins per lot so the first Elan came through over 3hrs in. I decided to bid, but kept my limit to £2500 on the purple sorry palacio one (lot 105) and was outbid: it went for £2700, plus commission plus VAT.

EDIT : CORRECTION IT'S STEEL BLUE (MY FAULT!) Thanks Jonathan: see below

It was a fairly tidy car, looked OK underneath, but did need new window scrapper seals they were well dried and cracked. The hood seals were all pretty good, but inside needed cleaning and tidying up. All looked clean and original under bonnet. There was even a new bagged Lotus cambelt in the boot. MOT till Aug 2016, flat battery but started OK with power starter, ran nicely, good oil pressure and good charge. Brakes felt firm and handbrake only need 2 clicks to be solid. Missing B post caps and hole in hood in usual place partially repaired.

Spoke to buyer and told him about LEC so we may see him on here shortly as he bought it to use and do up a bit. Also (for you eagle eyed ones) it was an SE with S2 wheels: my "plan" would have been to buy some SE wheels and sell the S2 wheels to fund the refurb.

The Eclat 521 went for £2100 but I left before the red Elan came up.

At least it has not gone to the scrapyard in the sky is still on the road. Final hammer prices all available here once updated.

Goodness, their pictures must be rubbish. I would never have picked that as palacio - I had it down as metallic grey. Glad to hear it's gone to a good home. The red one is still not showing on the site.

As it happened we didn't make it - I've been off with a stomach bug all week. Which is probably just as well, as I would have been seriously tempted by the preceding Lot 104: the Lancia Fulvia coupe. Always did like those.
