More power

Postby steble » Mon 23.11.2015, 14:20

I would like more power....... whats the best way to get it out of these?

I know the simplest start is you can gain reasonable power from changing the exhaust due to it being a turbo'd car.

Any other simple ones, I believe it is too old to have it remapped

The simplest most straightforward way is to fit an Everest chip. This will give you up to 35bhp more. Whilst not a true re-map it does fit into the ecu and is an easy DIY job. See the mountain chip link at the top of the page and have a good read.

Wider bore exhaust will help too, but that will almost certainly require porting of the turbo. See wikilec on overboost and porting.

After those you are into bigger injectors, bigger turbo both of which probably do require a re-map. Someone has even fitted a nitro conversion!

I have the Everest chip and took it out when I bought my car. I soon put it back.....nuff said! Many on here have Everest chips fitted.

Any power mods should be accompanied by a brake upgrade or thorough overhaul. See PNM or Hi-spec for all brake upgrades.

Hope this helps.

John

Quickest result for power boost would be to change the exhaust to something like the PNM Engineering one (Cybox). Makes a nice noise and the car doesn't feel like the power is being "strangled". I lived with that for some time and was surprised what a difference it made; the car was much more enjoyable to drive. The Mountain chip without the upgraded brakes will probably kill you unless your original brakes are in really tip top condition (which is possible). After doing the exhaust and lived with it for a while I would save up for the Mountain chip, brake upgrade and turbo porting and have it all done in one go. Not cheap but well worth it. Power beyond that I think I would change to another Lotus; perhaps one where I could travel upside down for a quarter of a mile and not have my head ripped off. In the dim and distant past I rolled a Vauxhall Astra down a hill 3 times until it was a ball of metal and I got out unscathed. I wouldn't want to try that in the M100.
Let us know what you decide and your thoughts on the upgrade(s).

Thanks all for the input.

Yes the PNM brake upgrade was well on my radar lol

As for swapping for another Lotus in the future, I can't afford the one I'd want. I tried a £9000 Elise, and thought it was s**t tbh. Always wanted an elan when I was a kid, tried this one and loved it. Plus imo it will be going up in value at some rate before long so plan to keep hold of it.

Exhaust was the first thing on my list, as it does feel like there is more there that needs releasing. (along with a KnN filter or similar, not that it does anything)

I knew you couldn't do a remap as its ODB1 but will look into these chips thank you.

I will be happy with 200bhp, at least until I work out how i'm going to get a roll cage on it lol

A nice 2" Exhaust will bring you up to 175 Bhp, even with the pre-cat in place. See Dyno here:
forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=19191&p=299433
When you go bigger (I know you want to  ) then the turbo probably needs to be ported or else you will end up with boost creep as allready mentioned above.
When you do that, you could empty the pre cat housing or better:  buy or make a custom downpipe. You could consider loosing the main cat as well, or replace for a sports free flow one. I would reccomend a 2.25" pipe which appears to be enough with a stock turbo and the boost upped to 0.96-ish bar, which is the maximum the stock injectors can keep up with. Also with a 2.5" pipe you will end up with less ground clearance of an allready low car.

All this will give extra oohmpf, mainly in the low -end as you can see from the dyno chart.

Good question. The answer is unfortunately not straightforward.
this page will help you find out.
If you are still unsure, then the only way is to check the chip itself in the ECU or find someone with Elanscan. This will tell you the chip type you have.

Boost creep indicates that you have too much air.
The requirement for larger turbo indicates that you don't have enough.

They are contradictory. What you actually want is a turbo that spools more quickly, which usually indicates that it is smaller.

A free flowing exhaust may help the turbo spool more quickly and spin more freely, to the extent that you have so much air you need to post the wastegate to get rid of it faster (I have both Cats so don't have this problem). So for money and time spent the exhaust first.

Cheap and dirty
use a bleed valve to fool the wastegate into opening later - Details here somewhere.
If you have a car without the O2 sensor you could richen the mixture to give more power/cooling
Use an octane booster - the ecu has a knock retard function

Or buy the Chip as others have mentioned and let that work it all out.

Except that the overboost cut out is there because the injectors are close to their limit, so you can't go much richer.
Some have gone for bigger injectors...
The bigger injectors throw 50% more fuel in (which the ECU is unaware of because it controls injector cycle). To fool the ECU the other way, you need to then fit a 3 BAR MAP sensor.
It will run like this, but maybe not as smoothly as it did before you fiddled with it.
To get around this, some have changed the ECU for a Haltech programmable one which can be totally re-mapped.
It is all a matter of how much you want to change things & how much you are willing to pay.

Rip - Agreed at some point something has to give, but with a bit more air enabled by a free flowing exhaust. A bit more fuel provided by twiddling a pot has to be amongst the one of the "simple ones"
