25 year rolling tax exemption petition

Reinstate The 25Year Rolling Road Tax Exemption

The Tories promised to reinstate this when elected, but instead chose 40 years.

Hmmmnn I've just used the link to sign the petition. So it works from a Macbook.

It worked for me (just done it).

Whilst I can see what the government did (and why they did it!), it was the death of many 'classics' with a frozen 1972 date....

Some Stags were tax exempt, some wern't (and had no realistic chance of becoming such) - hence an earlier car suddenly became more valuable than a later one...

.... closer to home for me was the fact that whilst the earliest Dolomite 1300/1850s could be tax exempt, no Sprints would ever be - so many were scrapped :(

I put one into my garage (where it has been sitting for the last 22 years), and have recently sent the paperwork to DVLA to have it registered as a 'Historic Vehicle' as it is now over 40 years old.....what a bloody palaver that was!

Nowt straightforward about it - because it went off the road before SORN was introduced they had no history of the car in the past 23 years - I only had an 'Old Style' V5, but at least it was in my name, and current address.....

.... they stated that I would need to get the car MOT'd to verify the vehicle and 'get it on the system' - but it isn't going to pass an MOT with the engine and gearbox on the floor of the garage!

Eventually they issued a new V5, but I'm now into the game of having to declare it SORN every so often.

Had i been living at a different address to the log book, or purchased it from someone else with the paperwork as applicable at the time, it would have been impossible (or at least, very tricky) to do now, and would have to wait until I was ready to get it MOTd - by which time the rules may well have changed again.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

This is a pain and rather unfair, but my chief concern is still with the new European Complience Issues that they are planning to introduce.

Some may recall a recent case where an owner in Switzerland had to remove his PNM Callipers and replace them with the original brakes, this article in yesterday's 'Cyprus Weekly' suggests the same is in store for all of us:

I don't read that into the article at all. It seems to be talking about tightening up on manufacturers after the 'VW Emissions Scandal' and not accepting manufacturers figures and their devious ways of getting round emissions tests. I don't see it as suggesting older cars are affected at all... I cannot see that restriction you talk about coming to the UK but interested to know what the consensus of opinion is

In the 70's friends from Germany could only tune their BMW's by paying Schnitzer, Alpina and a few other companies to fit upgrades as these companies had obtained government approval - even wider wheels had to be obtained from these. They were incredulous that I'd put a 2 litre V4 engine into a Ford 100E Anglia which I used as a towcar to tow a 1000cc Mini for racing that I'd prepared myself and also had a road-going Cooper S I'd modified as I saw fit. Firms such as Speedwell, Downton, Longman, Oselli, Holbay, Scholar, Cosworth, Kent Cams and a few thousand others could not have existed in Germany at that time. The supply of parts for owners to upgrade their cars was not allowed so it's not surprising that the UK is the home of motor racing and nearly all F1 teams are based here. There is still a HUGE industry based in the UK and firms like Demon Tweeks, Hi Spec, PNM etc etc would be threatened by EU restrictions so I'd expect a HUGE reaction against such stupidity.

In my experience, Germany and several other European countries suffer from being permissive societies. By that, I mean that to do anything requires the State to permit it. Your example is a good one. My business recently opened an office in Germany, and we were astonished at the enormous amount of paperwork required when we are used to a streamline system in the UK. In contrast, in the UK, you can do what the hell you like, so long as there is no law to prevent you from doing it. That difference is profound.

For this reason, I can see the time coming when EU rules are introduced to prevent modifications to old vehicles. Whether this is the one, I don't know. But when it does come, it probably won't be sufficient reason on its own to vote to leave.

I'd call that a "Restrictive Society" myself... Hopefully the big companies will make a big noise to stop more stupid legislation being introduced. We've got enough already...

I'm a Professional Engineer (Electrical Power) and a Member of the Institute of Technology and give definitive interpretations of the IEE Wiring Regulations but since January 2005 and the introduction of Part P I'm the same as "Joe Public" and can change like for like on my wiring but to fit a new 13amp socket I need a "Registered Electrician" who has paid his annual registration fee of over £200. So it's ended up not about who is competent to do it but just another Government money earner. Fitting a wood burning stove is another 'controlled activity' that involves a registration fee and that is certainly not 'rocket science' !!!!
