Hi all, I've just joined this forum after browsing for a long time, and find it an excellent source of information. I'm hoping to get back into Lotus ownership via an M100 Elan. I've not owned a Lotus since I sold my S4 Sprint in the mid eighties , wish I kept it in the garage but the expanding family required a more practicable form of transport !
Unfortunately, there arent too many Elans around in Scotland so I'll probably need to head South for choice, only looked at one locally and it had been kept under a tarpaulin outside for the last ten years and was needing a bit more work than I have spare time for.

welcome and good hunting just have a look at out riggers on the forum you need to be aware there is steel under the carpets on the sills which can rust it is not galvanised and ant the easiest to repair as it is bonded to the fibreglass get the best you can find. other people on here no a dam site more than me about the cars but when i have needed help there is always an answer on here great forum.
i have had mine for 4 years and love it.
ps pop your nose under the rear as the wishbones may need some tlc.

You'd probably be surprised just how many there are in Scotland. I can think of 15 without really having to think too hard and at least 3 of which are currently for sale.

Let me know your budget and I'll point you in the right direction

PS there are probably just as many, if not slightly more, M100's per head of capita in Scotland than there are in Englandshire

Hi Rambo, after reading your warning about outriggers, I looked through the section in the forum, and was shocked !.I didnt realise that this could happen, thanks for the tip.
Looks like people are managing to repair the rust but it looks like an awkward area to have to weld, I think I'll need to buy an endoscope before I look at any more !

Hi KipperOzzy - you can see what I have done to my red Elan in that same thread. I got a friend in the village to do mine as he has all the right welding gear and equipment and is used to working on Jags, of which he has about 10

My red one is coming up for sale soon so watch this space. And/or Pissedonheads

Hi Andy b, it was your message that got me to look on the outrigger thread, and Rambos pictures in it , looks like a good repair

Don't be off put by the front outrigger issue, it was a major concern for the past few years but from being considered a 'car killer' 5yrs ago it has morphed into being a 'defined repair' as per the related thread!

And this is testament to the power of this Forum

Of course, the rear outriggers haven't had such a comprehensive analysis or solution for several reasons:

1. they are so well hidden
2. the jacking brackets aren't load bearing
3. Water ingress at the rear isn't considered to be so severe

So aside from checking the seatbelt mounts these can be (almost) discounted. Though 'watch this space'
