Water pump "best place to buy"

Postby Tannerman » Sun 17.04.2016, 13:34

Hi all firstly apologies for not being on here or posting for a while but been mad busy with things.

Started the Elan this morning for the first time in about 6 months started first turn all good...

Took her for a run around the block and noticed the temperature above half ( which it never is)

Anyway long story short it looks as though the water pump. Has gone literally peeing out so I need a new one and I'll do belts while I'm at it.

Question where is the best place to buy seen lots of mentions of rock auto etc but nothing decisive

Thanks guys need to get her in rude health and get on some meets again :-D

I'd indeed say Rockauto.

RockAuto

I've ordered about 6 sets from them over the years for my cars and other LEC'rs. Excellent service every time

:agree:

I'd agree...Rock auto every time.
Just be careful when ordering that items come from the same location, otherwise you get stung for multiple shipping charges. Also make sure the pump and belt have the same rounded profile.
Whilst you are in there don't forget to change the cam belt tensioner and adjuster as well as the intended water pump and cam belt.

Yes, but make sure it has the rounded profile type drive pulley. There were some square profile pumps that got mixed into the parts bin and sending one back to the US is not cheap and it wastes a lot of time.

From R/A:
AIRTEX AW9220 {#WP717} Includes Gasket: This pump is driven off the timing belt. Timing belt should be replaced with the pump.; This pump is supplied with a round-tooth pulley. This pump is not interchangeable with the AW9221. Failure to use the correct pump could result in severe engine damage.

This is the only pump I have seen that consistently has the correct pulley

I used the previous set of rockauto for my yellow Elan and some years later ordered a complete set which I have recently seen that they have supplied the wrong pump!
Return is indeed too expensive.

That happened to me as well, the wrong pump was supplied. I did buy two extra in any event but I have used those and still have the 'wrong one'. Not too fussed given the price but even so.....................!

Having ordered and forwarded several water pumps for UK owners, I know that the AIRTEX AW9220 pump IS the correct profile. The Bosch one that used to be available is also correct but it was discontinued.

Hi John,

The one I received was in the right box but totally the wrong pump!! I'll dig it out and upload a photo. However, the tooth profile on the others was correct.

regards

John

PS John, could you please PM me the 'key in boot' solution? :-D

I guess being sure the right pump is put in the box is always a worry.

I know Rock Auto allows returns and I expect someone returned a different (cheaper but wrong) pump in the more expensive package. I sometimes get a package that has the wrong part inside. Being in the US, They usually just send me a replacement without asking for a return. The replacement always had the "right" part in it.

I will email you the PDF

Last order I put in to RA was for 3 Airtex water pumps. All arrived quickly in the right boxes with the correct pumps, round tooth profile on pulleys etc.........
