If you are intending to replace the gasket sump-engine: there isn't one!!!! It is just sealant carefully applied.

If it is leaking then once the sump is off you need to clean off all the sealant from both the sump and the engine edges, then re-apply new sealant and re-assemble. Whilst the sump is off, remove the engine oil pick up pipe and gauze filter and give it a good clean. On re-assembly be careful not to get excessive sealant anywhere near the pick-up pipe or you'll have problems.

Also change the oil filter while you are there: it is a very easy job with the prongeron removed.

Can't remember what sealant I used but no doubt someone will pipe up with the correct type.

Apart from reading workshop manual, see Sump Removal as well.

Good luck with all your work!

Make sure you scribe alignment marks on everything - the ally inlet housing can go on in any position....

Grampy wrote:Will drop the sump and fit a new gasket too.
Why? sump gasket doesn't usually leak - Check the CAs and blanking plug - that is usually where it comes from.

Will you be replacing the downpipe as well?
If not, you could remove the ceramic honeycomb matrix of the pre-cat.
Helps in speeding up the spinning of the turbo.

Don't think I will be replacing it. Can't see anything in there. Did the 1990 car have a cat?

The UK spec SE Elans did not have a cat, only the S2 models.

I always forget if this goes for the pre-cat as well!

Apart from the down pipe being an ugly chunk of pig iron I can't see any real advantage to replacing it. I spoke to my father today he is going to port the Wastegate and remove any broken studs as he has far more patience and skill than me. The Heat sheilds I was planning on painting (not sure how long that will last) also a tidy up of the manifold with paint and grind out to match the gasket. I guess I also would like some new studs and bolts to make things easier.

Also looked at spray bars for the inter cooler out of curiosity or maybe a better inter cooler with a better core. The other thing when I get the chip is larger injectors but not sure they are necessary.

Other injectors are not needed, saves you some pennies.
The forum is full with threads about the claimed benefits of another downpipe. Do a search on piper downpipe and enjoy the read ;-)

There is a massive difference in weight loss and performance increase from changing the down pipe. Also http://www.asheritage.com/ made me an excellent replacement intercooler and radiator (both with bigger cores).

About to rebuild the turbo

Postby Grampy » Tue 24.05.2016, 10:26

I have the turbo off and some time off tomorrow to rebuild it. This is the bit I need to ask about.

* Mark the orientation of all components of the turbo, especially the compressor relative to the shaft! All main components are pre balanced, but the small parts like washers and nuts are not. You'll need a re-balance if you mess up!

So for example the compressor to the shaft. What did you mark it with? Is there any room for error? What other parts do I need to mark?

Help on here has been invaluable but I don't want to cock it up at this stage.

Thanks in advance
Craig

P.s. Loved the step by step guide

I marked the shaft and the turbine with the cut of a scalpel. You won't get any more precise than that!
Good luck with the rebuild

Not going to plan so far, two bolts for the turbine side have sheered. No big deal I guess just some patient drilling out. Now to remove the turbine side out of the housing. It's in solid and won't come out :( is it a matter of force or am I missing a trick? Lots of heat and knock it with wood???

On the positive side the compressor side looks good with only small marks in the wheel.
