power steering removal

hi all, am i right in thinking some of the early n/a cars had no power steering? im wondering about the practicality of removing the power steering from my elan and if it would mean changing the rack?

It would be easy to remove the pump and piping, but yes, you would need a new rack to enjoy the correct gear ratio for man-draulic rather than hydraulic, and hence more turns lock-to-lock. As most of us are so used to PAS cars, it will be quite a shock driving the car without: do you recall the days of not being able to turn the wheel when stopped? The steering effort required may also drown-out the excellent 'feel' we currently have.

Is Missy an S2? I can't remember. The S2 rack used to be available on aftersales and was a little bit better 'feel' so I put one of those in my car and I love it.

I presume this is to do with 'adding lightness'? If so, then I applaud it!

There is a manual rack in the Parts Manual. Manual is 2.96 turns lock to lock and powered is 2.74 so marginally different.

Your choice but I'd try removing the belt to see how heavy steering is when trying to park before I went too far down that route...
