Samco or Rubber Hoses?

Hi All,

I am planing to change all the hoses in the colling (and heating) system..

Do you know where I can get them with good price? And which ones to buy?

It looks like if I buy from SJ Sportscars (using their own reporductions, and using the long- one piece radiator bottom hose, the price is about 165 GBP + VAT, if I go with the Samco option it is 269 GBP + VAT.

Do you know a cheaper option to either of them? Or which ones would you recommend? Is samco worth the 100 gbp difference?

My car is a standard s2, I am not into tuning up and increasing boost etc.. But longevity of usage would be an important choice for me.

There was a group buy 2-3 years ago for Samco hoses and we got a reasonable discount. Unfortunately I think that has now closed.

But everyone who has fitted them, including myself, thoroughly recommend them: but only use the coolant kit NOT the induction kit as there was a problem with one hose which could damage the turbo. There are no problems with the coolant kit at all. Everything fits nicely, but some old pipes are a bu***r to remove.

Definitely worth it: but also buy new jubilee clips (stainless) with it. Some clips will be damaged on removal and others will be well rusted. Adds c£34+VAT to the bill!!

Why not just buy them? IIRC the group buy gave approx. 20% discount off Amber list price.~equivalent to the above price.

It's a bit of pipe. Never installed a kit on an S2 so I don't know why it is needed.. ..fitting a kit to an SE involved recycling a joiner pipe~no idea why and others have said it shouldn't be necessary.

It's not just a pipe. It's a 19mm to 16mm reducer or 3/4" to 5/8" in old money and available for less than a tenner from FleaBay.

Should we start a group buy list and we'll see if we can leverage something close to the 30% discount that Amber were originally offering? If only some knew how to start a poll.

Well, Geoff, I suppose we could start a group buy, but we should get an indication from James to see how many people we need to achieve 30% and the sort of timeframe involved.

I finally gave in and purchase a S2 samco set from Amber Performance on eBay on 22Mar2017. They have quite a long lead time if you want a set, I was given a estimated delivery date of 12May2017. £346 (including VAT) + another £40 for a stainless hose clip set.

I'm really hoping they are worth it! I just need a new header tank to go with it.

Don't get the one that splits or has the dodgy yellow cap or your nice shiny blue anti freeze will be all over the garage floor

I still think the original ones were better made and more durable

PS the old ones clean up very well with perseverance but you will never get rid of the 25 years worth of plastic discolouration

Wayne has some of the NEW 3rd generation Vauxhall/Opel tanks for sale. I have some here in the US but his shipping will be cheaper and faster.

Lotus have changed their caps twice in the last few years. The last one was also yellow but not a GM cap but now they are black.

Did you go for the slightly dearer one with the eyesight or the bog standard one ?

Can you post a photo of it in situ ?

I've still got the original header tank, it's just nasty and discoloured. I'll end up buying one of the metal alternatives eventually.
