Water leak , SORTED THANKS ALL [pump]

Hi I can't find my answer on here,but I have a leak but i can't trace ,before I start stripping its on power steering side,jacked up and removed wheel its dripping down front lower side of plastic cam belt cover ,any advice greatly appreciated

Water pump is located inside the plastic cam belt cover on the upper right.. If you can get the cover off (difficult) you can probably inspect the pump.
Also the hose should connect the water pump from that location..
If you follow bottom radiator hose it goes to the cover and joins the pump if I am not mistaken.. Visual inspection to that area might help?

I am pretty new to the Elan, there should be a lot experienced ppl to reply..

The water pump is behind the plastic covers, but the bottom hose also attaches to the block in that area as well as to the radiator. Take a look at the parts manual page 46.01a

Pray that the hose clip is a bit loose or the hose split slightly. A much easier job than replacing the water pump.

But if it is the water pump, change the cam belt/tensioner/adjuster at the same time, unlkess it has been changed recently.

The pump is behind the cam belt cover if you look on YouTube under lotus cam belt replacement it will show you how to remove the cover it's a good idea to replace the belt at the same time all available from rock autos

I agree that the water pump or bottom hose are the first things to check. The thread viewtopic.php?f=29&t=25265&p=319638 seems to be a similar problem, but was not closed out by telling us the resolution.

Hi all last post I checked out and it seems exactly same problem as mine,that's next step to remove covers and have a look.
I've removed it before to clean this area.

There is another possible cause for a leak in this area - the radiator bypass pipe.

Check out where the radiator bypass pipe inserts into the block on the front of the block. It's a push in fit and is sealed by by an o ring - the end of the pipe can rust and the ring fail to seal on the rusted surface. Difficult to see as it's obscured by turbo, downpipe, power steering pump etc ie it's below and behind them (this from memory, haven't looked there for a while and don't have the elan here).

A leak from this pipe finds it's way down to the same spot you would expect the water pump to leak.

The leak can appear intermittent as the bypass pipe is only in full use when the thermostat is closed ie when the thermostat is open, coolant flows to the radiator and is not bypassed via the pipe back into the block.

Took top cover off started ,and water spraying out from pump .
Where the best place for pump in UK or does anybody have a cross reference ,I've seen on here possibility of Vauxhall omega

Not in the UK but RockAuto in the US are a good source for the water pumps and the timing belt & pulleys if you want to do these while changing the water pump.

Well I was very fortunate , water dripping from notch behind crank pulley = water pump gone.
In my case there was five mm side play,probably rusted as car was garaged 15 or so years never moved.
But the replies and help from here = quality.
Pump done belt etc etc
