It's been a while since I owned it so I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall that the serial number of my first Elan SE (a UK model first registered in 1990) was M8161. Andy_J now owns that car so should be able to confirm whether or not I'm right about that.
Serial Elan owner: 2002 - 2012. I may yet buy another one...
