Hi All,
is this one below an egr valve?
if yes, this is disconnected for some reason by the previous owner (unless if i did it by mistake, i did play a bit with the hoses in that vicinity while loosening the oil seperator.)
What would the effect be and why would someone disconnect it on purpose?
İ do not have any check engine light on.
The catalytic converter has been cut off, but i dont think this would have any relation?
Pictures to follow..

The "device" is the metal round part that looks like a UFO.
And yes it looks messy, this is the rusty coolant that spilled all over..

Yes this is the EGR valve and should stay connected, the EGR opens during closed or small throttle openings when the cylinders require extra air to overcome the vacuum of the engine. The EGR also helps with emissions and fuel economy.
I have knocked vacuum lines off while working on my engines many times, sometimes it can be a head scratcher finding where they lines came from, I had to use a mirror down the back of my engine after a oil change when the actuator line came off.

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
At certain engine conditions it introduces exhaust gas into the induction system to reduce pumping losses, lower the combustion temperature and control emissions. The valve is operated by vacuum and controlled by the ECU using a solenoid valve. Check the vacuum pipe connections (they look ok)
The wire is for a temperature sensor (I have only seen it on S2s) and it isn't used so there is nothing to plug it into.

it is indeed an S2 car. But this wire is definitely coming out of egr valve and has a connector. Looking deep enough there is also an empty socket on the wiring loom that this connector can go into..
this looks like either this is sending some information to ECU or is activated electronically.. Either of one..
i am not sure if my egr is functioning properly or no.
Will plug it and then compare.
But i dont have 0.6 bar boost pressure, maybe this valve causing it.
Thanks for replies.. Any way i can notice if its working properly or not?

Yes, and it is definitely an EGR temperature sensor, and the EGR valve is definately Vacuum operated.

That'll be interesting! where exactly will you plug it in and what are you expecting to happen? Let us know how you get on!
The point of the EGR on the elan is to cool the charge to prevent formation of NOx so you probably aren't going to notice if it is working or not. you can check its operation by sucking on the vacuum pipe.

There is a female connector just below the egr valve on the wiring loom and I did plug it.
After a quick ride, unlike my expectations of either achieving 250 hp or the engine blowing up, feels like nothing happened...
But I feel like achieving a major breakthrough of successfully connecting a female and a male connector!

Well I was looking for something else and came across the closed loop manual.
Which explains why all of the ones I've ever seen have been unplugged and why it doesn't do anything... Unless you have a Californian car?
Does anyone know what the correct torque is for the Knock and Oil pressure sensors?

Not what i was expecting.. When the engine got warm the catalytic converter overheat sign came on (which supposed to be only in japanese cars!)
What does that mean??

It means that the EGR temp sensor is not supposed to be plugged in and you have connected it to the CAT overheat sensor wiring.

This is really strange... There is a male connector coming out of EGR temperature sensor... Just exactly in the same location there is a female connector.
They are an exact match.. And you ae telling me the female one is the wiring of the catalytic convertor harness, which should be located nearly one meter from here (as it should be in the middle of the exhaust pipes)...
And that light does not come on , it only comes on after 5-10 mins of drive when the engine is hot..
Lot of coincidences...
Why does the ECU have a pin for the EGR sensor? Okay maybe its better to leave it unplugged, but for some reason I have a feeling that the engine runs hotter than it should ( I only got the car a month ago so I dont know how hot it should be) and it did make a sense..
Thank you, maybe I can chech find my friends car which is the same setup..

BY reading above (Thank you again Simon for pointing me to that direction) I came into conclusion that my EGR valve is not operating as it should and I have a tell tale light on( this is from closed loop manual so can be an S2 enhancement), but instead of check engine light, it did light another tell tale light. Am I correct to assume this?
But by looking above the sensor wiring has to be connected to the main harness instead of left unconnected?
So what do you think the next step would be ? To Check the selenoid or the valve?
(THe engine really fells hotter than it should be , so I suspect that my EGR is not working properly as it should decrease the combustion chamber temperature, I dont think this is only a sensor error, would you agree?).

Oh Boy!
Will you believe me if I say that the Catalyst temperature warning light (Japanese market only!) is to indicate high catalyst temperature as required buy law in Japan. The Japanese require this as a hot catalyst may set fire to the grass under the car when parked if the catalyst is too hot. They leave the engine running and when the catalyst has cooled to a safe temperature the light goes out.
The warning light has absolutely nothing to do with the EGR valve. As above if you did actually have it plugged in correctly (California only) and the egr valve wasn't working, it would light the CEL which is the one with the picture of an engine.

No I completely disagree - The EGR valve has nothing to do with engine temperature. It is job to control emissions, if it doesn't work you produce more pollution.

a. unplug it and leave well enough alone
b. read up on what EGR valves do.
c. Plug it into the ABS light and see if your car develops an ABS fault

What a good idea!

Unless you install the Californian Elan PROM, it ain't got a hope in hell of working.
