I was recommended a product called Frost. I can get the details if you wish. It is said to be OK up to 1200 degrees.
£24 a can

Right I started to take the core apart and it all started going wrong. Removed the compressor wheel no problem then removed the three torx screws and broke the seal with two Allan keys. Then tried to remove the disk and it started to crack and would not budge
I gave up at this point and went for a sulk. I contacted loads of companies on eBay and nobody could match the core. The only one was the core in Germany at nearly £300 (not a chance I was paying that) so I took the ref numbers and went back to hunting one down. Bingo found one for £120. It arrived today and is identical.
Now to re fit it (the bit I am not looking forward to as the skin has only just grown back on my knuckles)

After months of trying to find time the turbo is in (new cartridge) and the housing is bolted up and the gaskets sorted. I can't wait to bolt it to the engine and get everything else bolted up. Will be interesting to see if the 22mm waste gate makes a difference.
Fingers crossed

Do I detect that things are not running smoothly?
At the moment I hate Subaru ... seems the factory process scratches the paint off a bottom corner of the Forester sump and because it's rusting away behind a plastic undertray you don't realise till oil is dripping off the undertray. Lots of vids on Youtube of people replacing their sumps but mine would only come off by removing the heatshields for exhaust & manifold so have spent 2 days cutting & grinding the 12 rusty bolts to get those off. Being a boxer engine I'm doing everything from underneath and all the swarf falls on me and being sweaty it sticks...
Think I love my Elan now

Phil
Leave me alone, I think I know what I'm doing.
