Hi Guys ,
i'm looking to by an Elan , found a nice car but on my checks after a test drive i left it ticking over and waited for the coolant fans to engage , this never happened even when the car was showing 3/4 up the temp gauge , is this normal and do they kick in at a really high temp , or is a switch /sender /fuse issue more likely ?

Hi David ,
Welcome to LEC and great to hear you are going to jump In with a potential purchase .
Others may say otherwise but the do kick in quite late .

That said i like others hard wired a switch into the system so when getting stuck in traffic we can just flick the switch ..

I think it may be on the wiki how to fit one ..

Its also a fair possibility the fans are goosed, the whole area behind the front bumper is prone to corrosion and the fans / housing / wiring can suffer badly. If you do buy it make one of your priorities taking the front bumper off and see what's lurking behind it. :wink:

Hi - both fans should kick in around about the 3/4 mark on the gauge or before. I have fitted a lower temp Rodney Dickman thermostat on one of mine and on the other have a fan override switch so I can turn the fans on early or longer if stuck in stationary traffic

It is obviously very important that these fans kick in so, if you can, check again. Both should kick in (on Collapso Red Rambo only one fan kicked in when I purchased it. The other had seized solid !!) You might also have a switch problem or, more likely, the fuse has blown ??

Hi Guys ,
Well I went ahead and bought her anyway just figuring whichever way it could be fixed , should have her home by the weekend so hopefully get chance to take a closer look .
Thanks for the advice , it's appreciated , where is the fuse for the Fan ? I'm guessing that's the first place to start my checks

Fuses 3 and 4 above the instrument cluster. Both should be 15A. Fuse 3 is RH fan and fuse 4 is LH fan.

Incidentally, the main fusebox is located just to the left and below the glovebox, ahead of the passenger door hinge post.

The 3rd fusebox is above the instrument cluster/binnacle

Check your owners handbook or the Wiki for further details of fuses, relays etc...

The first place to start is grounding the wire on top of the sensor the fans should run.
