Thanks just found some threads regarding the cas bearing replacements.

Can't believe the belt is loose as it had its timing checked (and adjusted) not long ago but I will check tomorrow.

Loose cam belt ? That sounds serious to me, even with my limited knowledge of cars

Did you have the tensioner replaced when you checked the cambelt ? Just a thought that the tensioner might be giving up if the cambelt is loose eg not providing the correct tension ?

What does the car drive like anyway ? I would expect you to have some loss of power issues/misfiring etc...under high rpm or full boost

PS I don't want to worry you unnecessarily but when I had the cambelt/tensioner/idlers replaced in my First Scudo van I was driving home from Edinburgh putting the foot down on an uphill section when I suddenly felt a loss of power, a bit of bucking then suddenly nothing. Dead ! Turned out to be a faulty tensioner according to the garage. It was allegedly new and faulty but, in my opinion, might not have been replaced and/or tensioned correctly. I never got to see the old tensioner or the faulty new one. Very convenient

I have no other symptoms - drives fine, is smooth - no misfiring, full boost, good fuel economy.

I would check the adjustment of the sensor in the cas assembly. I had a rattle and it was the sensor touching the spinning part, the gap should be roughly the same as the spark plug from memory.

Ok thanks, was it easy to take to pieces ? I'm worried that I'm going to screw up a whole load of timing !!

The black plastic cover can just come off 3 screws/bolts 4 or 5mm i believe . not difficult at all really

Well I can just about get a feeler gauge between the sensor and the wheel but it does meet a bit of resistance when passing it through.

Can somebody please tell me if there should be any play in the wheel, I have a couple of mm when I turn the wheel back and forth.

If I remember well I had (edit: and probably still have) a similar amount of movement.

There does seem to be a small amount of oil underneath it but not much and I couldn't get any sort of sideways or up/down movement from the shaft, so I'm thinking less and less a CAS problem.

and good luck removing the belt cover to see if the belt is loose its not easy

Just been looking into this - looks like you have to remove the engine mount bracket to get to the last bolt to get the cover off - F*cking hell !!
