**** FTDI DRIVERS WARNING ****

Well I have spent a most enjoyable afternoon trying to work out why my newly built interfaces / test equipment / desktop pc / laptop pc / Elan refused to talk nicely together. Then I noticed an important notice on the shielded bag of the last USB to serial interface I'd bought: "When used with Window OS please ensure that the device driver is updated to version 2.12.16 or above." Sure enough, the driver was out of date and my desktop pc is now working again. There is no warning or error, just a failure to work, so if anyone has issues try updating the driver!

My Elanscan computer still runs Windows2000. I don't think there's been an updated driver for that in 10+ years. If I ever need to move to a new machine, I know what to do. Thanks for that, sir!
