Available options to silence Peco (Cybox) exhaust

Dear all,

I just bought a house with a garage in a rather friendly neighbourhood / community.
As a 'gift' to the new neighbours, I would like to silence my Peco exhaust a bit.

Does anyone has some experience with this and know what options are available?

But will it fit with the standard 2.25" peco system?

Yep. Fitted one on mine a couple of years ago. To be honest, I don't think it made too much difference to the neighbours but now it's sooted up it takes the edge of the booming at high speed.

Another option is to get your local exhaust fabricator to insert an additional silencer in the "up" bit of the exhaust in the right wheel arch, just ahead of the wheel. The attached photo should show the position.

I have been running with this arrangement (2 1/4" stainless exhaust) for over ten years. It is still not as quiet as the standard system, despite the fact that I had the additional silencer replaced by a larger version last year before a long european trip (3,500 miles) to reduce the booming.

The attached picture is from 2005 during the initial fitting, and shows a cylindrical silencer. The current additional silencer is oval in cross-section and larger (but I don't have a picture of it).

It was worth it, but I'd like it quieter.

When driving, my current system is noticably quieter than a big bore straight-through stainless steel system without the extra silencer, and the "droning" noise (which I found wearing on a journey) is almost gone. However, idling is not as quiet as I would like. You definitely know the engine is running.

I also thought of replacing the front rubber hanger (is this the correct term) for a softer one, as I believe that most of the droning comes from here
Any opinions on this, or a link to a supplier for softer hangers? The rear hanger cannot flex so much for a reason, but I think it is viable to replace the front...

I fitted the PNM (Peco) to my Elan and it sounds fine. Nowhere near as loud as the larine was on my Elise and I thought that that was relatively quiet. I'd be surprised if it upset the neighbours.

I am about to move to a new neighbourhood in 3 weeks and I still intend to buy an additional second silencer as a gift for the new neighbours
It is either the PNM option on the second silencer or replace the current (2.25") PECO silencer with a piper, PNM or alternative one...
The aim is to silence the car a tad and to get rid of the droning... No pointers to softer hangers anyone?

Don't go down the Piper or PNM route then as personally I have found that they are as loud and boomier as the Peco. Believe me, I have both and love the throaty rasp

If I were you I'd just let the engine tickover and creep past in 1st gear

Then when you've passed the neighbours, floor it

Well... On a cold engine the idle is the loudest part that i (or the neighbours) want to get rid off...
I drive off with clutch only and don't use the loud pedal at all!

Thanks for the tip not to exchange the entire system as in your experience it will bring nothing!

I suspect the way to go is the extra silencer. I think you can get one from Peter Musgrove at PNM Engineering. Worth a phone call to discuss your options with him anyway
