I think we wave because we consider ourselves to be like minded, the people that don't wave are either oblivious to this or just blind

For example:

Westfield owners like the shape of the Lotus 7, they also tend to be very hands on and build their own cars.

Caterham owners like the shape of the lotus 7, they tend not to build their cars but have a man to do it for them.
Caterham owners don't wave at Westfield owners (unless by mistake then they will vehemently deny it )
