What is this item?

Postby John Syracuse » Fri 28.07.2017, 12:42

I've tried searching for what this is with little luck, hopefully someone can answer this from the top of their head, but what is the item in the picture circled in green? It had a vacuum line running to it and broke right when I tried to take the vacuum line off, as best as I can tell it's either a check valve or a restrictor, but I have no idea and don't know where to get another one (or if I even need it to be honest).

Any help appreciated.

Chris

They went obsolete in 2013. The GM/Isuzu part number went obsolete ever earlier.

If you can find a GEO Storm DOHC in a breaker yard, it should still have one but most I found were also broken.

I have made a 1/4" brass threaded repair that can be screwed into the remaining boss with epoxy to seal any vacuum leaks.

I managed to snap mine off when replacing the Brake master cylinder , which in turn required removing the power steering reseovior ( spellcheck?) which it turn meant moving pipes which broke the silly little bit of plastic .

I fiddled around with pipes and washer jet connectors and as far as i can see the thing does nothing except work as a corner ..
The car ran fine with just a tube bunged in it and some PVC tape around it to seal it .

I have since found one on my shelf and replaced it .. to which nothing changed apart from the aesthetics .

The engine is a disaster under the hood, I've neglected working on it until recently, haven't had time for it. Starting taking a couple things apart a couple weeks ago and realized quickly that whoever owned this before me was a hack or had one working on it. It at least better not have come this way from Lotus, it's embarrassing how things look in there.

This isn't an engine I'm planning on cleaning up, it's going to be replaced with this beautiful beast:

4XF1-awesome.jpg

And I realize I've been saying this for five years now, but it's going to happen, dammit!

Back to topic, I don't recall ever seeing this item on Geo Storms, I'm pretty sure the MAP sensor always just came straight out from the back of the plenum. It's definitely not on the plenum for the 1.8 pictured above, nor is there a place for one. What is this supposed to do? Is it a restrictor?

If this is something I need, my need to come up with a fix is time-sensitive as I'll be moving to Florida soon and it'll be really helpful for me for this car to drive. And when I say drive, I only mean on and off a trailer and into and out of a driveway, I don't need it to road trip, grab groceries, or crush my enemies, if it moves that much with a C/E light the whole time, that officially works for my situation.

Thank you all for the prompt replies, I appreciate it.

Chris

No, it's from a 92-93 Geo Storm, it's a 4XF1, which is very similar to the Elan motor except that it has a longer stroke that takes it to 1.8L and was only available non-turbo. This one has been bored to 1.9L and is going to be turbocharged when it goes into the Elan though, we'll see how well it fits in the engine well, but this has been a long time plan of mine that's been on a stupidly long hiatus. I turbocharged one of these engines in my Geo Storm over a decade ago and it was all sorts of fun.

There is a 4XF1-WT project page that I haven't been on in forever if you wanted to read more about what I've been trying to do.

As Geoff said, it is a filtered vacuum port for the Manifold Air Pressure Sensor.

The GEO Storm Twin Cam used this as well as the Lotus and Isuzu. The single cam engine did not.

Just get a piece of 1/4 brass rod, drill a center hole and turn down one end and tap it to screw size 10/24. Clean the edge of the plastic where the original nipple broke off and tap it to the same 10/24 and thread it together with some sealant to keep the vacuum from leaking around the threads and you are fixed.

I have done around 10 of them now. You could also get a 1/8" pipe thread barb fitting and just use that. The filter is to prevent any oil in the plenum from "spitting back" and clogging the MAP. You can always put a small fuel filter in-line to make it a filter.

Making up a repair tube is easier and a better solution.

Several others looked into installing the 1.8L engine but found it is significantly taller and probably would squeeze in but it wouldn't fit well. There isn't much extra room in the engine bay with the 1.6L.

In Geo Storm land, I don't ever remember seeing it on the twin cam 1.6 (it has been a long time though), but it's definitely not on the twin cam 1.8. I'll just do a quick hack then to get it to work, the MAP on Geo Storms never had filters, so I'm not horribly worried about that.

As for the height of the motors, when I still worked on Storms, one of the things I did for curiosity was take apart a dual cam 1.8 and 1.6 from the Storm side by side to compare just to see what the differences were. The 1.8 block is about an inch taller, but the 1.8 intake plenum is much more compact and keeps the throttle body at the identical height as the 1.6 does when sitting in the engine bay. They also actually pulled back some of the increased block height by lowering the valve cover height on the head by about a half an inch. My recollection is that fully assembled, as long as you're not mixing and matching parts, the 1.8 nets out to only a half inch taller at the valve cover and no taller at all at the intake plenum. In either case I'm hoping to find out for sure, it's all conjecture until someone tries it.

Thanks again everyone for the replies, I appreciate it!

Hate to correct you guys, but the orange item in the first picture is a Boost Gauge transducer not a MAP sensor, so the item in question is the take off point for the Bosst Guage transducer :bananasex:

Are you talking about the dirty orange thing on the passenger side of the engine bay? The vacuum hose from that stupid plastic thing actually doesn't go to that, it goes to (apparently) the MAP sensor. There's a nipple underneath it on the plenum that goes to that orange thing though.

I actually didn't know what that thing was to be honest, but now I do! Thanks!

Orange thing is on the driver's side !!! But you are right, the FRONT TUBE FROM THE PLENUM CHAMBER GOES TO THE ORANGE THING

Just seen you are in the good old US so I understand why there is some confusion about where the passenger sits :bonk:

Dont panic!

The orange thing is the boost gauge transducer - BUT - it isn't piped into the bit that is broken on yours....

.... if you look at the car (and can just about make it out in the picture) - the orange lump on either the driver or passenger side (depending on if your English or Colonial), is piped directly to a nipple just below the MAP take-off - there is no filter/damper/anthing on that connection.

THE BROKEN BIT IS DEFINITELY FOR THE MAP SENSOR.
