You will get the folowing information if you check your M100 numberplate:

"Thank you for using the T-Charge checker. Your vehicle is subject to the T-Charge if you travel in the central London Congestion Charge zone Monday to Friday between 7am to 6pm, you will be charged £10 a day. This will be in addition to the Congestion Charge."

I put in my V8 Range Rover and got this:

"Thank you for using the T-Charge checker. Your vehicle is not subject to the T-Charge."

But looking at the website, it appears that my Triumph is exempt from charges as it is over 40 years old and registered as a 'Historic Vehicle'.....

This is a farce. For those of us who don't have to drive into London, it is quite amusing.
It is intended to discourage more polluting vehicles.
So my Elan which does 30-35mpg is more polluting than a Range Rover V8? I don't think so.
I tried the reg for an S2, because having closed-loop injection & a catalyst will make it cleaner, so maybe this will be acknowledged? T-charge still applies.

London's roads are a pain anyway. Much better to take the train.

I have no intention of ever driving in London but, if I do, it will be in my environmentally unfriendly Fiat van just to piss off Mr Khan. Personally, I think this is another unjust and unfair tax and is wholly discriminatory

Unfortunately I can see this punitive tax moving in to all major cities before long and will it help climate change ? Not one iota But it will line the pockets of local authorities hell-bent on their lunatic ideas

It's a diesel and the plumes of black smoke when I accelerate are mpressive. It runs ok though and passes the MOT emissions test every year without any problems

Well it's probably cheaper than parking in London and the average speeds are probably similar.

There are discounts:

If you hold a valid Blue Badge in the European Economic Area, you're eligible to register for a 100% discount, even if you don't own a vehicle or drive. While I understand there is a pollution problem in major cities, it's really stupid that they forbid certain cars just because they are old while they still allow newer one that pollute more. And of course the trains are not more practical than before, so that for instance the last train to get me back home leaves Paris at around 10:30pm Monday-Friday and 9:30pm on Saturday ... Basically that means I can't legally go to Paris during the week ...

Yes, I think that you are right. However, I think that this initiative is a good thing for London. The air quality just is not good enough, and it is caused by traffic. We can argue that one car is better or worse than another, but legislators have to base controls on what is measured when a car is certified for the road. Rightly or wrongly, they have chosen anything which is not compliant with Euro 4 or later. They have to start somewhere.

Personally, I never drive into London - I take the train in every day - so this will never affect me. But if it does spread outside of London, then so be it. That will be a small price for many fewer early deaths. 10,000 people in London alone die each year from air pollution, and that, I think is an outrage which we must do something about.
