ROPS - Roll Over Protection System - ROLL CAGE

Postby Minters » Wed 15.11.2017, 23:40

Hi - I'm considering an Elan M100 for hill-climbing etc - but I've never seen one on the hills and never seen a roll cage fitted to one - is it possible does anyone know?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Minters, Welcome.

There is some experience here on the forum with hill climbing with the M100. Somebody will show up and enlighten you (us) more on this topic.

There are (or were) 2 options that i know of: Both engineered by forum members, but i don't know if any of them got FIA approval. However both designs were discussed a lot, are structurally sound and not just cosmetic hoops... and I would like to have any of these roll protection as well! (anyone want to part from their hoops, please PM me!)

The early model was made by LGM (Lotus Girl Marie) on this forum:
viewtopic.php?f=131&t=24745&p=311755

The other one that I'm aware off was a Simon Carrier (SPC Kuching) design:
viewtopic.php?f=85&t=14880#p197361

So If you make one, please make me one as well, it will shave off some pennies perhaps for both of us :D
Good luck!

I may be interested too.. I'd like to do a lap of Laguna Seca in mine which is not possible without roll-over protection..

I tried to put together a group buy for the Kuching hoops a few years ago figuring that I needed at least 10 people to achieve a sensible cost. I never got close to that number. When I found an Elan for sale with the hoops already fitted, I bought it in place of my original Elan. I suggest that you do that too, if you judge those hoops to be suitable. I don't know if they are suitable for hill climbing. They are certainly well engineered and bolted to the car in plenty of places, but that doesn't mean that it is suitable for you. Simon Carrier did not certify them in any way.

Here is my original group buy posting. Be aware that fitting the hoops is very involved too.

Maybe not but he designed them for his own M100 and it's unlikely you'll find a better CV for designing a roll cage- https://www.linkedin.com/in/simoncarrier/ (Click on See More button)
Wish I could get hold of one...

Ha ha ... I should think so too ! Can't buy a 5th Lotus though, that would be my 7th car and I'm having problems with where to put 6!
I've got another 'little project' lined up for the winter ..
boxster1024.jpg

A guy near me was selling a Porsche Boxter 986 Roll Over Bar on ebay starting at £30 and he had no other takers so that's what I got it for, including inertia real set belts etc.
Plan is to investigate whether it's possible to adapt it to fit an M100. My spare SE still has no hood, cover panel or stowage area trim refitted so ideal for seeing whether it's feasible or not and where to feed loads.
It's 48" at base tapering to 46" soon after so width looks promising to start with and I don't mind chopping it about and welding it when it only cost me £30.

Also 986 ROBs seem to come up on ebay frequently at around £50 to £100 so may prove useful for those without a SPC or LGM version.

But not the satisfaction of knowing if it will do more harm than good.

That is somewhat the purpose of a forum.
Personally I have no intention of getting one, particularly one that isn't approved. Last thing I want is a bent bit of tube in the back of the head.
