With such a nice day it would be rude not to fit my new Coolex header tank



It was all very straight forward, no cutting bending or fettling required
While the header was removed I fitted my new coil packs and fancy plug leads

Is it truly visible by glancing at it? It's hard to see from the picture and I'm concerned that it's not all that useful in reality.

Well what have I been up to lately ?
1) I Converted to "closed loop", I found this job to be a bit fiddly, running the new cables and soldering them in some tight and awkward positions,
not easy in a tight garage, the easy bit was ordering and fitting the sensor and getting my chip modified (Thanks to Alan the chip guru) but it's done now and running smooth.

2) Operation dry knee is still on going:
I'm currently rebuilding the drivers door sliders etc, some bits were broken or missing, some replacement parts have been manufactured to complete the repair.
This should greatly improve the stability of the widow thus holding it against the seals especially on the falling seal.
I have also got some nice new seals to fit

That was easy peasy compared to the Elan

But now the oven's playing up

Time to try the window repair with all my replacement parts.

Before I removed the window it was typical with most Elan's, fair to say that the electric window operation was less than dynamic
I slid the window down the runners and connected it up.
I then tried it out and it stalled badly going up
I couldn't really see what could be causing the problem so I removed the glass then both runners which I left loose while testing it out.
The runners had a build up of many years of grunge so I gave them a good clean up and then slid them over their sliders just to prove there wasn't an issue there.
I then put everything back in the car and gave it another go, again slow to stalling going up although better than before.
In the end I ran out of light so I couldn't really get to the bottom of it, looks like I may have opened a can of worms

Before I owned the car it had a full body respray so I'm guessing that's when the parts went missing, not being untouched from the factory isn't giving me confidence
as there are many spacers of which could be missing or in the wrong place etc

The missing nylon slider boss was substituted for an aluminium one, this is because it would be much easier to bond a metal to a metal.

One thing I learned was that it is possible to have the slider blocks too 'rigid' to the pillars - as the window/frames have a slight curvature, if they are done up too tight the blocks will try to go in a straight line as opposed to round the curve.

It is a PITA, but i found that i had to trial fit the window a few times to get the blocks in the 'sweet spot' where they moved smoothly, but the window wasn't too loose...

....Oh, and you can't have too much Vaseline as a lube

I did get the runners sliding sweetly on the slider blocks all be it off the door
but once in the door the slightest conflict slows it all down.
I'm beginning to wonder if a slider block was removed on purpose
I've also ordered a new centre slide block as mine isn't sitting square and move's when it goes from up to down etc

Looks like we are both doing similar work at the moment, I have stripped down the passenger side and removed the window. As expected the butterfly clip broke upon removal and one of the sliders was broken so ordered the bits from Wayne and decided to replace the centre regulator slider at the same time, which I changed tonight.

I also found the rails were all gunged up and any lubricant had combined with dirt and dust to form a sticky paste so have cleaned these up and applied fresh vasoline so hopefully will be a bit smoother when all put back together.

Will be keeping an eye on your progress for any tips
