Lidl 240 volt impact wrench

Just picked up a parkside mains powered 450 watt impact wrench from Lidl £29.99 with 4 sockets 17,19,21 and 22 not used it yet but looks well made and at the price its a bargain only on offer till next Thursday info on the box is Max loosening torque 320Nm Max tightening torque 100Nm (safety limited) 3600 rpm .

Top tip! I'll try to get hold of one.

I have their "Dremel" equivalent and it's a good bit of kit.

Do that Jim, can't beat a bit of mains power. Very good price too.

Both batteries for my 24V impact wrench had become like me - old and decrepit .. They'd sort of work straight off the charger but a job needed anticipating by several hours to ever use them.
2 new batteries were going to cost more than a 24V complete kit and mains powered ones were much cheaper. As I only used wrench in the garage or immediately outside didn't see a problem as I'm set up for a mains powered tyre pump too.
Mine cost a bit more than Lidl's but not a lot.. (ebay: Made in China cheapo ) It does 0-2200 rpm, has 1,000 watt motor and max torque of 450Nm /332 lbsft.

Watch out when you use it - if the nut is stuck the wrench tries to rotate so kicks like hell. Bit of a wrist breaker if you aren't prepared for it ...

Oh, also don't do what my son did. Pressed the trigger the wrong way and tried to tighten a tight wheel nut - another wrist breaker ...

As long as the bolt is not broken it's OK

(on the serious side I am surprised you feel that much torque reaction in your wrist? I have never tried an electrical impact wrench but a pneumatic one certainly doesn't transmit "any" torque to the wrist?!)

Pneumatic work by an air motor driving an impact clutch that produces the rotary motion. Think of an air hammer banging on an impact screwdriver and you'll get the idea. Impact clutch can be of various designs but negligible torque transmitted to the wrench, it's more an in and out vibration.

Mains powered impact wrenches just have a reduction gear and usually some sort of thyristor speed control. Cheap ones like mine don't seem to have speed control. Hence the warning. Press the button and it's 'full throttle' and 450Nm - there's even a kick when it's not on anything. Great for undoing but for doing up I just flick the trigger to spin it up using mainly momentum and torque up by hand after.

It's a pity the electric impact wrench transmit the torque reaction as I would say one of the things I like most is there is no real torque reaction from the part being unbolted. It really helps sometimes

I used my impact wrench this morning doing anti roll bar drop links on a Vauxhall Vectra and my wrists are still connected to my arms there was no hint of any torque pull on my them just like using my air wrench but I don't have to wait for the to compressor build up pressure, its great bit of gear will worth the £30 spent on it.

Think yours must have a clutch system if it has a Max torque 100Nm tightening & 320Nm loosening (assuming RH thread ..?)

Mine just has a rocker trigger switch, clockwise one way, anti' t'other.

Well, I was wondering about getting one as I can't get a scaffolding pole in to undo the pulley bolt on Caryn's Golf which looks like it's got a water pump leak. So I went and grabbed one of the last ones at Yate.

Why, I hear you ask, did the kitty fiddler take his brand new toy apart? To show us how it works perhaps… No, as well as the spare brushes, I appear to have a spare screw: stored in the motor and it rattled!

Is that a thyristor trigger with separate reversing switch Geoff? See your dog clutch has an angled face on the dogs.

My switch is just a polarity reversing job and dogs are near vertical - but it does go rat-a-tat-tat at 450Nm.

I have the reverse problem - my batteries are fine, but the charger no longer works.... a new charger is half the price of a new complete unit.

Dave, if your batteries look like this I'll bring the whole kit to 'Combe for you. Wrench & charger work fine, just batteries don't hold charge between uses - and I'm such an impatient bar steward these days.
It's only cluttering up my garage.

Well, with the cash burning a hole in my pocket, I went into the Cirencester branch of Lidl today for my wrench. Plenty available, but I suffered the mother of all project creep I got:

- the impact wrench
- an electric planer of the same brand (£49.99 - last one in the shop)
- a wireless fibre optic camera for looking inside outriggers; hooks up to an app on your smartphone. Probably not great resolution, but good enough to learn the awful truth (£20 special special offer)
- a proper hole punch with a selection of male and female studs etc (£2.99)

And the real irony: I’m doing electrics at the moment, so I won’t use any of them for a while . . .
