O2 Sensor Removal

FINAL UPDATE:
all is well. Installed new o2 sensor, test drove, everything working fine as before and no CEL !!!!

Castle Coombe I had been trying to remove it for two week....well.....today I managed it!!

I tried....

Standard size 3/8 ratchet and O2 remove tool and penetrating oil
Standard size 3/8 ratchet and O2 remove tool and three jubilee clips and penetrating oil
Standard size 3/8 ratchet and O2 remove tool and three jubilee clips and penetrating oil. Ice.
Cutting off the end of the o2 sensor and trying with a socket. This time I broke the ratchet!
Turbo torch to heat it up. Standard size 3/8 ratchet and socket, penetrating oil and a pipe around the ratchet.

AND HOT DAMN, 10 minutes later and another squirt of penetrating oil...

I've always found penetrating oil is a waste of time, even though it's much better for releasing stuff than WD40 which some recommend...

I normally use this stuff to give it a thermal shock - Freeze spray.. Get the exhaust/turbo hot as you can and then put a tube ( about 2/3 of toilet roll cardboard tube is good) and give the O2 sensor a blast to shrink it. Get the socket and a big shifter on it as quick as you can and out it comes out without too much protest ...

By coincidence I'm just refitting a Subaru engine and can't get the new heat shields back round the O/S manifold with the O2 sensor in situ ( the old ones were so rusty they just fell off). The sensor is on the O/S bank and being a boxer engine is accessed through the O/S wheel-arch. (Think M100 crankshaft pulley nut .. M100 O2 sensor is easy by comparison ). Engine is not complete so couldn't get anything hot so got out my 'big shifters'. Used a long 1/2" extension so I wasn't in the wheel-arch but it has a hole for a T bar.
Just happened to have kept a length of 1/2" spring steel bar from my up and over garage doors when I replaced them with roller doors and it's longer than my 1/2" shifter as well .. Boy that was tight, reckoned it was torqued to 'a grunt and a half'..

The amount of uses some people recommend for that water repellent is quite alarming isn't it?

Has anyone tried the impact wrench that Lidl was selling on these hard to remove items like the O2 sensor or crankshaft pulley bolt ?

I tried an impact driver with a socket on it, Is that the same thing? Pretty sure that damaged the thread on the Sensor and in the hole too so I stopped using it. I think it wasn’t turning so my hitting it was just pushing the senor down

If that were true I would return the impact driver. It should only rotate with impact, not hammer against the socket axially.

I see what you mean. Wrong assumption on my part I think. I saw the threat on the O2 looked damaged. I had been trying all sorts to get it out like I said, so perhaps it was something else that damaged it.
