Well I certainly got my moneys worth out of the rear pads on the campervan......
.... when it went for a service, they told me that the handbrake issue was caused by a seized rear caliper. They quoted me a price of £300ish to sort it out (with discs & pads). I decided that i was more than capable of a caliper swap (as I do the Lotus every year anyway) on a VW T5.
2 new calipers, 2 disks and a set of pads was on my doorstep in 48 hours, at a cost of £120 (plus change).
Finaly got round to the job this afternoon, but didn't know which side was the problem (not that it mattered, as i was swapping both). Acording to the VW forum it can be a 3 hour job to swap one, depending how seized the carrier bolts are.
Started on the NS (it was the one I got to first), and it took about an hour and a half - no problems with what came off, so it must be the other one which is the problem.
Took the wheel off the OS and saw that the disc was a bit past its best - the bolts were a tad coroded, but all came out with suitable amounts of force (and decent sockets). The outside pad had nearly 1mm of friction material left, but the inner one had bald bits and thin smears of friction material on the metal!!!!
So much for the pad wear light on the dashboard - the sensor had completely worn away.
Still, all replaced in another hour and a half.
Now the handbrake works, footbrake is excellent, and all is well.
At least the sliders for a VW are easy to clean and regrease, unlike an Elan - and parts are both readily availible and cheap - so I had a smile!!!!!

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
