Front door speaker blown

Years ago I replaced one of the front door speakers and carefully put the unused new speaker away for future use . Now I need to replace the other one. But can I find the speaker I kept...nope. Can anyone tell me the size (dimensions) I should be looking for as I cant be arsed to dismantle the door card just to measure the bugger.

You've been here long enough that you ought to remember - there can't be many original speakers left just the one in your car and the one in my passenger door.

I seem to recall it being a rather involved for what should be a four screws job. That's why I haven't got around to fitting the second one.

Anyway, four inches... Wiki speakers.

Its relatively easy to put in larger speakers if you want to. I have 6.5" speakers in my doors. Also added a second speaker to the door for a mid range sound boost when travelling with the roof down. Just cut a new piece of plastic to hold the larger speakers and add a new, larger grill to the door.

Problem is paper cones get damp and then get blown to bits by a decent power level...
Here is what I used after I'd sprayed them 'satin black '... ebay 80W-8-Ohm-Speakers-2-Pair-Marine-Grade-Hi-Fi-Kitchens-Boats
3 years old now and still blow the dirt off the car ..

I've found the Door trim instructions in the wiki - Step 14 before you can remove the four screws. Crucially it is missing the detail of removing the weather strip...
Drill out rivets
Watch rivet rotate and fbreglass crumble
Wish you hadn't started

Maybe that's because you don't need to!

I have removed the door cards several times to repair the window winding mechanism and to replace both front speakers, and never had to remove any window trim/seal.

Same here... Drilling out the weather strip for replacing a speaker? I don't think so!

That might also explain why I can't find the post with all of the pictures.

No project creep here I start off with the expectation that an engine rebuild will result in a front suspension rebuild which will necessitate a rear suspension rebuild.

So a "remove door card to fix misbehaving window" project expanded in scope on seeing the condition of the (original) speakers....lord alone knows how they produced any sound at all. Yet more creep to check speaker the other side...yep knackered too.

New speakers sourced...but has anyone replaced the flimsy plastic sheet covering the rear of the speakers with anything more robust? Can't help but think it wasn't very effective at keeping moisture out, and having that plastic flapping around doesn't seen very elegant....

Just removed the drivers side glass to fix the waistline to glass weather strip and fix the sticking electric window when I discovered the speaker is well knackered.

Anyone recommend an alternative?

Yes, not in the most sophisticated way but it will probably work out better in the end. I wrapped a Ziplock bag around the back of the speaker and tucked it under the speaker before screwing it to the mounting plate. Could also add a bead of silicone to seal it if you like.
