Rear Light Cluster

Postby Fredjohn » Tue 17.07.2018, 22:41

I am aware that various people both sides of the pond have designed and made different moulds for replacement light cluster for the M100. Some moulds still exist somewhere, but can't remember where.

HOWEVER, you may all be interested in a move by Renault Alpine Tuning Services (RATS) who have developed a moulding to take 3 separate LED lights plug and play for the Renault GTA, which also used the original M100 light cluster. Some info and pictures are available on their facebook page. They say it will fit the Elan, and is very similar to one done in the UK, as fitted to dapinky's car.

Rear Light Cluster Details

No doubt more details will follow, but price seems to be around £600 a pair.

theyre very much like the Kia ones.......
these seem to have no covers so along the lines of the previous one made by folks on here.....
but £600 for a pair.........I dont recall anything like that on here.......unless their version includes the lights.....
mmmmm........not decided.........not keen at the moment but the look make grow on me.....
hey but if youve got a broken rear end then I suppose its the only way to go.....

I was under the impression the LEDs were included. Be good to see the finished article on a car.

Not a great fan of having 3 lamps each side - but it will probably look better on the car than it does in a picture. (and something which is available is always better than a better thing which isn't!)

i was wondering if rear indicators must be visible from the side ? this particular design will not allow someone in your blind spot to see that you started indicating where the original design would.

theres always the small bulb in the A panel. but the rear ones are lot more visible.

If you look at the KIA tail lights, the "outer" lamp is in the "angle section of the lamp so it IS visible from the side as well as the rear.

It also has a "rounded curve to it so it looks kind of OK.

Lighting Regs require indicators to be visible at 80 degrees off a straight line (outwards) and 20 degrees (inwards) (horizontally) - and 15 degrees vertically.

However, it doesn't actually say how much light needs to be visible. That is how the Elise lights get away with the requirements - they protrude slightly from the panel (more at the top than the bottom), and the indicator is the bit which sticks out a bit so can be seen from the side.....

..... as these panels are being designed for the Renault Alpine, I presume that they will comply with French rules, not UK ones (even thought hey are possibly similar).... or at least, I hope so, otherwise there will be afair few people upset at spending money forthem when they can't get an MOT or use their car on a road.

No.

Road Vehicle Lighing Regulations 1989, Schedule 7, Part 1 (paraphrased): you have to have one front, one rear, and one side repeater on each side . . . The rear indicator must have an angle of visibility of between 80deg outwards and 45deg inwards, unless the vehicle’s maximum speed is less than 25mph.

Bolt in as original but with LED units for a modern look. Will come with loom for simple re-wire to OE set-up.

It's nice to know that something is available, but I'm not sure I'd want LED lights - maybe they'd sell just the panel without the lights - but then you'd need to find something else that fitted.

Why not LED lights (just curious)? I've converted all ly lights (and I do mean all) to LED and wouldn't go back.

I've no problem with LED lights on new cars, or LED bulbs in existing housings. But I think those LED units look to "modern" for the Elan!

But have you kept the original light housing ?

I would happily change to better lights/LEDs but would like to keep original looks if possible.

I have. LED bulbs are pretty common, cheap and bright these days so they work well and you never have to change them again. I have a pair of Kia rear clusters that have yet to be installed. The license plate area needs a bit of work to make them fit and there's no reverse lamp in them so it's not exactly plug and play.

they do dim overtime. its particularly noticeable with strips.

If you're buying the bulbs they shouldn't. The strips are pretty cheap and mostly useless for exterior car lighting in my opinion. Earlier versions were weak and prone to failure. The cob based bulbs and strips are bright and generally reliable - even the Chinese ones. :-D
