OK, very stupid question.....

How can I tell if an S2 has AC from a picture of the dash?

In front of the gear stick.
The bottom row of switches the middle one is blank or the A/C switch.

At least I think it should be the middle one - I swapped mine around. Anyway no guarantee as it could be any switch put in by a PO.

Doesn’t look to me as though this car has AC. The three switches shown should be (from right to left on my S2) rear fog light, hazard warning (with the big red rectangle), and AC (if fitted). The AC position on your car seems to be blank. The AC switch is the same size and shape as the fog light one, but has a symbol like a snowflake graphic.

There are other ways to tell under the bonnet, but that’s a good starting point.

I will 3rd that. Very easy to see all the extra piping, compressor etc......

NOW PROVEN TO BE FALSE...
I believe that cars with AC have the 6 position selector (Upper Control) and the non-AC cars have the 4 position selector.

Not always true, John. I’m non-a/c with a 6-position selector (S2)

No it's not related, it's just that the later models have the 6 position rotary selector.
I have the 4 positions one and I have the A/C option on my SE.
