I've ruined my car..........

Postby simonbuk » Thu 25.10.2018, 16:51

Whilst taking advantage of some of my car coming to pieces, I did the following.

The turbo got rebuilt and I got them to increase the wastegate hole up to 21mm.
I removed the pre cat and fitted one of Piper's pre-cat downpipes.

It now drives like a bag of sh*t. I mean nearly undrivable. Rubbish.

Overboosts really easily. You try to push on at all, and it just goes through the roof and EML comes on.

It's like I've got no boost low down for a while, then starts to build - BANG !!

I feel like putting everything back how it was at this point it's so awful.

What have I done ??

(Oh, and I think I've burnt my alternator out too - just to top it all).

Have you verified that the boost control flap in the wastegate is opening?

Have you verified that the vacuum hoses between the vacuum boost controller and the manifold are hooked up correctly as well as the vacuum hoses to the boost control solenoid?

Has the boost control solenoid failed? If the boost controller doesn't open, you will over-boost all the time.

Are you running a Mountain Chip or a manual boost control of some sort?

No performance chips currently installed.

I haven't verified too much at the minute to be honest. Spent enough time trying to start/charge the car, identify burning smell, go get gallon of petrol, swap battery out of another car, etc, etc. Just got f*cked off !!

I did have a quick look around vacuum hoses as when I change up the turbo whistle is not as before. Really quite different. So thought a hose might be off.

Need to gather some info, charge battery overnight, and then tackle with a fresh head full of others ideas tomorrow !!

I suggest a bit of calming down, take a break and start from scratch.

If the wastegate isn't opening at all, then you need to solve that first.

It could be due to seizure, damaged/missing vacuum hose, bad control solenoid (at base of the Air Cleaner, damaged/missing vacuum hoses going to the manifold.

Also, make sure the vacuum hose to the MAP is installed correctly.

Use the manuals to be sure everything went back together as it should.

Yes calming down now, down the pub .....

I now can't picture how to view the wastegate ? I obviously have to remove the heat shield first, it's then just obvious isn't it and in view ?

There is a posting on here somewhere that shows you how to test the waste gate using a pump to see if it moves.

If it helps, I'm sure it was Phil (Lotusflashermanphil) who posted this handy tip. I will see if I can find it

Hi Simon,

If you're at your Orpington address I have an Elanscan cable you could borrow but unfortunately my Laptop battery only lasts a few minutes before it dies.
I could lend you an Elanscan Logger though, you'd just have to get the file from the SD card onto a PC...

Cheers,
Ron

You can get a cheapo bike pump and adaptor from your local Sports Direct. You'll probably get a football chucked in for under a fiver

PS this pump/adaptor trick is also good if you get water under the petrol flap and it won't drain away. This is a Muley tip I seem to remember ??

How do you get these clips off ?! Are they crimped on and you have to break them to get them off ?

Basically, yes - they are an 'industry standard' crimp fitting, but without the correct tools you'll never get a good seal at home (especially with the limited access) if you disurb them.

I did it the simple way by cutting through the pipe and getting a small screwdriver into the crimped bits to open them up a bit, followed by some butchery with pipe grip pliers, then used silicone vacuum hose and jubilee clips to replace it.
