Chris, header tank cap should have 120 stamped on it! I think that is psi? Anyway, that is on mine. (S2). Cheers from Clive. (Sheriff 464).

No, no no no no!

120 psi would put the boiling point up to about 180 degC.

I don’t know the Elan-specific value but it should be around 1 atmosphere or 14.7 psi which will allow temperatures up to about 120 degC. If the cap has 120 on it, I suggest either it refers to the temperature it opens at or it’s 12.0.

Anyway, you should be safe enough as it should be impossible to buy a 120 psi cap!

Well I was sure it was 15psi but took my cap off yesterday and was going to ask exactly the same question Chris. Like sheriff, mine is stamped 120 which signifies 120kPa (kilo Pascals) or 17.4 psi or 1.2bar.

Thanks chaps. Just bought the Coolex header tank with new shiny cap but it let by when tested. Put the old one on and it was fine. I'll get on to Coolex on Tuesday.

Guess this may have something to do with it…



This seems to go against a lot of internet wisdom that says the old metal ones will last for years but the plastic degrades on the modern ones.

Loads of them - Vauxhall, Opel, Saab, Daewoo and probably Ford. I went for a Febi Bilstein 01211 because I could get it next day from Amazon.
