Engine tick noise and turbo lag

Postby Mountainman » Tue 21.05.2019, 08:52

Hello, seeking advice from all you knowledgeable people

I brought my M100 a few weeks ago from a garage which had received a service.

The car has 82000 miles and since I have owned it have done 140 miles, mostly driving back from garage.

The engine sounded perfect although I’m no expert by any means.

However after I had taken the car out for a bit of a run after a couple of weeks on the drive, I noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine it was audible enough to get my attention as it was not there before. Any ideas please?

Also is it normal for the turbo to kick when delivering some power?

I get a feeling it’s a trip back to where the car was brought.

Thanks for any advice

I bet most replies go for a sticky hydraulic tappet.

Maybe you could give an idea of where on the engine the noise is coming from. Just open the bonnet and if you don’t have a stethoscope, use a solid bar or big screwdriver to put against various bits (carefully, obviously as you’ll want to avoid getting it or you or your clothing anywhere near the moving bits) and the other end to your ear.

Be aware that the CAS (the round black thing on the right as you look at it) acts as a sound chamber, magnifying sounds from other parts of the engine, but it is possible that a misaligned Hall sensor inside it might cause a ticking noise. Just to rule out 5th gear problems, get behind the front left wheel (you should be able to do it without removing the wheel) and put your stethoscope/bar against the alloy casting on the end of the gearbox; although any 5th gear problems would produce more of a “whirring” than “ticking” noise.

I doubt it’s anything serious.

Good luck.

John

Re your lack of turbo performance I suspect a sticky wastegate.

Do you get a fluttery sound on full boost ? And what does it say on the boost gauge when you are booting it ? Should be about 0.65 Bar, or more if it has an Everest or Kilimanjaro ESM chip

Have a look here for an easy cheap fix for that . Worth doing anyway to check it is freely moving

Some people use mole grips to simply free the shaft. Others use a bicycle pump to check the wastegate actuator module is all working hunky dory.

I think we need a bit more of a description of the “kick”, but no, it shouldn’t.

Yes, you're right John. I read the initial post and assumed sticky wastegate but "kick" sounds more like overboost ???

Maybe there is a big exhaust on the car and the wastegate isn't ported ??

We definitely need more info

Obviously hard for me to try and explain in words, and I I cannot thank you enough for your
Thoughts and input I’m sure you know a lot more about this than me, as I’m just starting out.

The ride is smooth though the gears when gentle but when you get that urge to basically for the better
Of the expression put the foot to the floor! It takes a second maybe less for the power to kick in
A small jolt and the power is there.

Maybe I’m over thinking this one, i just would like the reassurance everything is as it should be
before the warranty runs out, if there are any gremlins with the car I have 6 months to sort if the warranty
covers.

Thanks again

Mountainman,

What you describe sounds a bit like 'turbo lag' - basically, when you open the throttle fully, a number of things happen - all of them are dependent on the throttle opening and the revs at the time....

The Throttle possition sensor (TPS) tells the ECU that 'more' is required from the engine, so the ECU will add fuel at the injectors (fairly instantanious) and accelleratrion ensues.

The turbo should only start to add boost once the engine is over 3000 rpm, and is a gradual application of extra 'oomph' up until the red line (or gear change).

Also, there are a set of secondary throttle flaps which open at full throttle (at something like 5500 rpm, but I cant remember the exact number) to allow extra air intot he system along with the extra fuel.

As all of these things occur at different times, and it takes a few fractions of a second for them all to catch up and allow smooth performance, there is often a bit of a 'dead' feeling when you first boot it, especially you are under 3000 rpm at the time (more noticable on a gear change than a steady run). until the boost request from the turbo catches up.

This can be minimalised with a dump valve, but can't be eliminated completely, as the turbo is a mechanical boost 'additive' and there are fluid dynamic considerations which can't be overcome.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks again for your responses, certainly helps.

I may have to take you up on that offer theelanman, very kind indeed
Would be nice to get to meet some fellow passionate owners.
Many moons ago I was at college at Harper hill so I know the Buxton area really well.

Would be a great drive out in the Derbyshire countryside.
