I am buying a chipped Elan but the insurance company wants to know how much extra power the car puts out. It is a S2 and has a 2.5 inch exhaust an upgraded air filter and an Everest chip. I assume it started at 155 bhp but where did it end? Does any one know how much extra power the chip puts out?

I think the insurance company wants to know how much the percentage increase in boost is rather than expected bhp as I originally thought.

35bhp is a 21% increase over 165bhp, if my arithmetic is correct (35/165)*100

My mistake smart ass

about 45 bhp then. total bhp from a Everest chip is about 200.

If you follow the link to the Elanchips website at the top of the page, on the right just under the LEC banner, the “about chips” section states:
Stock Turbo Elan
Maximum programmed boost 0.65bar
Fuel cut limit 0.92bar
Boost pickup rate quite slow (boost lags behind target value under heavy throttle)
Nominal power 165bhp (flywheel)
Everest
Maximum programmed boost 0.9bar
Fuel cut limit 0.98bar
Boost pickup rate enhanced
Dyno power 200bhp (flywheel estimated)
If the extra power is a problem, don’t let it put you off the car if it’s a good one otherwise. The chip can easily be changed back to standard: again see the Elanchips site fitting instructions.

I thinks an s2 has 155 so if all the mods give 200 bhp that is 45/155 x 100 = 29 %. More that 25% boost and I have not found an insurance company to cover me

Everest chip only adds 35 bhp max as previously mentioned
viewtopic.php?f=44&t=27430 Assuming your S2 belts out only 155 bhp when finely tuned that makes an added increase of 22.58 %
I've never had any problems with any insurance company when declaring an Everest chip in over 15 years of ownership
PS if you have an aftermarket 2.5" ss exhaust you may also have enhanced performance. Typically 8 bhp

Of course the definitive answer can only come from a rolling road test. Measure the performance at the flywheel in the stock set up. Then repeat the test with the Everest chip in situ and do the maths to get the true and accurate result

I agree with the % requirement from the insurance company. Once mine were told the increase was 21% (SE) they did not alter the premium at all. So 22% should fall into the same category. If they do put up the premium, then go to another company. I have mine on a classic policy with Footman James (Other companies are available).

Like this
https://elanchips.co.uk/index.php?optio ... 3&Itemid=4Interesting that in each case a large bore exhaust gives a lower result.

"Dyno data is intrinsically pretty variable"
That's interesting. And the repeat dyno testing does look a bit noisy

Looks like for most of the dynamic range that a larger bore exhaust gives less bhp and only a marginal increase at 6000 rpm (Everest only)
Need to discuss this further on FB

I wouldn’t worry too much about the accuracy of that particular graph, or read too much into it or draw too many conclusions from it. It was put together, as it says, from various cars on various dynos and therefore is a bit of a hodge-podge. The chip development thread (now gone) discussed it.
The other graphs (like the “most boost and power without knock” which decided on map 8 for the updated Everest) were taken from tests under more controlled conditions and so are more reliable (but note that the “repeatability” point taken on map 8 shows that even that data has variability; however the trend is clear).
Trying to stray back to the OP’s concerns, the Everest gives + or - 20% increase in power by increasing the boost (in an engine-safe manner). Just because you have an S2 it won’t give more than 20%. You won’t be able to stick an Everest chip into a car that has 80bhp and end up with 200bhp.

In the absence of exact data it gives a good picture of the likely increase. Sufficient at least to say more than 20% increase. The difference between SE and S2 is not statistically significant given the magnitude of the increase.
