Hi,
Just joining as I'm looking at an Elan as my first entry into Lotus ownership, currently running a Honda S2000, and a original factory MGB GTv8, and thinking the Elan would complement the two (and my daily Jag) perfectly.
I'm not afraid of mild spannering - but work takes a lot of my time currently. very tempted by an S2 either blue, red or maybe yellow with the solid black leather interior.
I've seen the one currently for sale in Carlisle - trying to sort a test drive out - it's a good hour away from home, and *very* strongly priced.
My pet peeve with older convertibles is seal maintenance - the S2000 has a similar issue to the Elan in that if the seals go - the car leaks and new roof seals are hard to come by, the answer to this in the honda world is Shin-Etsu silicon grease - and this one definitely hasnt had it - with the seals being dry and cracked. Otherwise to a non expert eye the car apart from the usual external wear and tear looks fine. I'm no sure if anyone else has taken a look?
Parts wise the elan looks somewhere between the MGB and the S2K - though I think availability is slightly worse than the S2K (more stuff is needing to come from the US).
I've read the buyers guide on here thanks it was interesting reading - and really looking forwards to my first drive.

Welcome to LEC Simes, sorry nobody else has welcomed you aboard!. Don't worry about seals too much, there are options available, like these....
actually inspired by the header seal design of the S2000 in fact

. Buy an Elan now before they get any more expensive.

Hi
Welcome. I have just bought a S2 and have found this board very helpful with someone always answering my queries quickly
I live just outside Carlisle and have been to look at the red car. It is well beyond my wallet. If I remember correctly it will shortly need a cambelt change, worth checking.

Hi,
Yes it's a little beyond mine as well, though over the phone, they did mention plenty of room for manuvre on price.
It will if nothing else give me a good baseline, thanks for the info on the cambelt change, it could be useful.

Was fortunate enough to spend some time with Alan and his Elan on his last weekend with the car hope you enjoy it as much as he did over the years ... This is Alan following me into Castle Combe a few weeks ago hope to see you take his place next year

Welcome to the site Simes, i live just outside Carlisle, i have a 1992 SE that is slowly getting sorted as it was a none runner when i got it, hopefully you will find a suitable Elan soon that you can just get in and drive.
