Possible Cam Angle Sensor Change Required!

Hi Everyone,

A bit of advice please.

For the last 2 years I have had the same issue, I have taken my Elan to 2 supposedly expert Lotus dealers and spent around £1500 trying to get it fixed without success and both have told me to put injector cleaner in the fuel regularly and that should resolve the issue, needless to say that hasn't made one bit of difference.

The problem is basically the engine management light keeps coming on, when the light is off it is a little lumpy under 1000 revs then revs fine after that, then intermittently, maybe after an hour, the engine management light will come on and the engine with rev superbly at low revs but won't go past 4000 revs in any gear, if I turn the engine off and restart the light goes off and the cycle is repeated, anyone else had this?

Having given up with dealers I think changing the CAS is worth a punt, I found the below, I take it this is everything I need?

Hi, the CEL is not just there to tell there is a problem. It more or less tells you what is the problem (=the thing that is out of its nominal range).
So you either need ElanScan or a paper clip to read the error number.

Also, that is no bargain. Any Lotus Dealer will sell it to you at that price as it is the suggested price in the Lotus Parts Price Book.

Recently. another M100 owner ran into a delayed engine management light that would not consistently return a code when using the paperclip method. The only code he could get was 14 which pointe3d to a bad CTS which he replaced to no improvement.

If he let the car sit, it would start and run normally again with no error but eventually the warning light would come back on.

After hours of reading and testing he finally replaced his ECM and the problem disappeared. Right now, the guess is the pull-up resistor for his Engine Management Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), thus giving an over-temp response to the ECM. I will have the ECM here in around a week and will dig into the schematic and with the help of Gary H. I wil try to prove that possibility that this was the cause.

I would do a paperclip test before spending that much on a guess.

Thanks Guys, I've actually had to book the car into a Lotus dealer as it failed it's MOT yesterday due to high emissions which I think is part of the same issue so I may get them to check the error code 1st and take it from there.

I'll report back once it is fixed.

you should be able to rebuild your CAS......using the hall effect sensor (depending on whats up with it....but it usually this bit that fails)

@ £32.....its a damn sight cheaper than £300......

I had a period of very rich running and it too failed its MoT..........which it passed after changing out the CTS........
mine had decided to tell the ECU the engine was running at -32deg so it was pumping more fuel in.........(ElanScan gave me the info straight away....)

also see if anyone near you has ElanScan......and cable........
