Does anyone know what would happen if this went wrong?

Where is it?

What does it look like ?

Are they available ?

I’m struggling to figure out what is wrong with my car and Colin from Revline suggested I ask about this.

Do you mean the coolant temperature sensor (CTS) ?

Or the manifold air temp sensor (MAT) ?

Yes the MAT, I was given the wrong name. I’ve changed the CTS and that didn’t fix my problem.

Can you tell us what the problem is? If it's overfuelling - failure of the Coolant Temperature Sensor is often to blame

The problem with my problem is that it is entirely repeatable. I could take my car out for hours and she runs perfectly. But the moment I stop and rest for 10 mins she runs like a bag of spanners and only goes back to normal if I switch her off and allow her to cool down completly. I have changed the CTS and Ive tested the leads and coil packs. I can't imagine how any of the consumable parts could be so consistently inconsistent. They work perfectly and then they don't and then they work perfectly again and then they don't. Colin from Revline felt it was most likely has to be a sensor somewhere that is tricking the car, perhaps into thinking its a freezing cold day and she's overfulelling which would account for the backfiring.

Your symptoms are consistent with hot coil failure or perhaps leaking injectors. Neither of which will set a fault code. Failing sensors will.

Would Hot coil failure be quite so consistent?

Yes but why doesn't it clear after a few seconds.
Easy enough to clear with a hard start.....
