Greetings from Richmond

Postby Varlic » Mon 28.10.2019, 12:21

Hi All,

I'd like to say hello to the forum members. The Lotus Elan has been on my bucket list since I test drove one in Norfolk back in the 1990s. It was in Norfolk Mustard and was such a hoot to drive around the Norfolk countryside near Hethel. Couldn't afford one then... Now, I've got one and I'm really pleased about it too :D

Occasionally, I arrange for early morning drives from West London to the surrounding countryside. Will post here on the forum when the next one is planned.

There are some jobs on my list to tackle...

1) Replaced the thermostat - thought there was problem because the gauge went up and down... now realise it's supposed to do that :o
2) There is a bit of a stutter on low rev acceleration... possibly cam angle sensor
3) Quite a few rattles from the interior that I'll try to track down
4) Exhaust note is a bit flat and farty so considering an upgraded back box if anyone has any recommendations?
5) Considering an LED lights upgrade as there isn't much candle power going down the road! Any, would love recommendations!

Finally, thanks to Dapinky and Simon_P for their help with my thermostat replacement!

Cheers,
Mark

Sorry I missed this post - Welcome!

For the exhaust I can recommend the Piper with a sports cat. Nicely made and a bit noisier without being too boomy - important on longer journeys. It is also quite enough that I'm not too worried about upsetting my neighbours when sat at tickover.

I can second Simon's Piper recommendation

I have the Piper (full S/S system) on my yellow one and the PNM set up on the black one.

I was also fortunate enough to have one of the first development PECO set ups on my original Collapso red. I drove all the way down to Liverpool for a heavily discounted system with free fitting. It took them about half a day as it was only the 2nd one they had fitted and wanted to make sure everything was perfect. The drive back to Scotland with that throaty roar and boom was fantastic and I recommended the PECO (then Cybox) set up to anyone and everyone

However, having had all 3 S/S complete systems I still prefer the Piper sound, even if it is a more expensive system than the PNM set up (which, from memory, was the phoenix that rose from the PECO/Cybox ashes)

Hope this helps with your choice and welcome to LEC

With regard to the lighting upgrade, I believe SouthWest Lotus have, or will shortly have, an M100 compatible LED headlamp system. They currently have one for the Esprit.

However, note the caveats about replacement lighting systems and the UK MoT.

Thanks, Mark, good to know. I hadn’t been searching particularly for LEDs; I just happened to know about the SWL ones. The PNM set look like a good deal when compared with standard replacements - the stainless hardware alone must add up to a fair chunk of the cost.
